<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What do you do with a baby while on maternity leave?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ok, so you&#8217;re either having a baby soon and making a to-do list for your maternity leave. Or you&#8217;re here because you&#8217;re on maternity leave and have no idea what to do with your baby all day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Either way, you&#8217;re in the right place. While you can plan for it ahead of time, it&#8217;s not until you&#8217;re in the middle of it that you really know how you&#8217;re going to spend that time away from work.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That&#8217;s why we have this list of <strong>things to do on maternity leave with baby</strong> that are essential and a lot of fun as well.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don&#8217;t have to do all of the things or even the most productive things. The most important thing is that you heal and bond with your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Congratulations! It&#8217;s going to be amazing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:18px"><em>“This post may contain affiliate links, which means I receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase using this link. Please see my disclosure for more details.”</em></p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What to do while on maternity leave before baby?</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Continue nesting</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you haven&#8217;t been put on bed rest prior to delivery, continue getting your home ready for your little bundle of joy.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Wash baby clothes</li>

<li>Finish any light cleaning</li>

<li><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/set-up-perfect-nursery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Have nursery ready to go (opens in a new tab)">Have nursery ready to go</a></span></span></strong></li>

<li>Prep some nutritious meals for after baby arrives</li>

<li><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/essentials-hospital-bag/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Pack your hospital bag (opens in a new tab)">Pack your hospital bag</a></span></span></strong></li>

<li>Install the car seat</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Set a schedule for visitors after baby arrives</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While you may not know what days you will have available until after you give birth, you can set up a basic schedule for visitors.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you want visitors the day or two after you come home from the hospital? What about the following week? Will you have family members staying with you? Are you okay with people just popping in?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once you are home from the hospital and have a daily routine, you can create a more clearly defined schedule.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="400" height="271" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/things-to-do-on-maternity-leave-with-baby-2-1.jpg" alt="mother kissing newborn baby" class="wp-image-8182" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/things-to-do-on-maternity-leave-with-baby-2-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/things-to-do-on-maternity-leave-with-baby-2-1-300x203.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <strong><a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/young-mother-kissing-newborn-baby-14585082/" target="_blank" aria-label="Letticia Massari (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">Letticia Massari</a></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What must I do when on maternity leave?</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Update your medical insurance</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is one of the most important things you must do while you&#8217;re on maternity leave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your baby has to be added to your medical insurance within 30 days of his birth.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They will more than likely require your baby&#8217;s new social security number. You fill out this information in the hospital and the hospital will send it to be processed. You should get a social security number within two weeks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set a reminder to call your insurance company with this information, so you make sure your baby is covered.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Have professional photos taken</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is high on the list of things to do on maternity leave with baby because you want to get these photos taken before your little one grows too much, usually in the first week or two.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Newborn babies between 5 to 14 days old are much easier to pose, stay in the curled-up position better, keep asleep better while working with them, and are generally less fussy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Worried about looking put together before you go out with a new baby? Not a problem. You don&#8217;t have to be included in the photos if you don&#8217;t want to be. This can be all about capturing your precious baby.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Take care of your baby</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This seems like a no brainer. I mean that&#8217;s your sole purpose right now.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But this is really the time to get to know your baby. Learn their cues, <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/breastfeeding-mistakes/" target="_blank" aria-label="get comfortable with breastfeeding (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">get comfortable with breastfeeding</a></span></span></strong> (if that&#8217;s your thing), and just settle into being a mom.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This may actually mean you have to kick people out of your house. People love to visit the new baby, but it can be difficult for new parents to adjust to this change. So do what you need to make the most of this crucial time to bond and learn about your little one.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>6. Have some quality time with your baby</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You only get six to twelve weeks of maternity leave (in the US). That&#8217;s a very limited time to spend with your new arrival.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take some of that time to be alone as a family and even just you and baby. Get to know them and their cues.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And take time for snuggles. My little guy didn&#8217;t like to sleep on his own for quite a while, so my husband and I split the night shift to get him (and us) enough sleep.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even after we got the nights straightened out, he still wanted me to hold him for his naps. And I wouldn&#8217;t trade that time I got to spend with him for anything.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, the housework can wait. Get the snuggles, do skin-to-skin, breathe in the newborn smell and enjoy the moment.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>7. Keep your baby book up to date</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oh, this was an epic fail for me! I mean, how do I know what my two-month-old&#8217;s favorite book is? It&#8217;s probably the one I just read to him, right?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do the best you can with this one because the first baby is the easiest.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>8. Take lots of photos</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know I told you to schedule a professional photo shoot. But that doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t take lots of photos on your own.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Babies grow so quickly in those first few weeks and months, so take all the pictures. Pictures of them sleeping, their first big trip, things you do around town, and all the big milestones.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can also take monthly milestone photos at home. Get a <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=milestone+blanket+for+baby&amp;crid=2ZQT6BJIVCKT4&amp;sprefix=milestone+blanket+for+baby%2Caps%2C106&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=4024fcf1c7c5a1c6cd914c8485d08f4b&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">milestone blanket</a></span></span></strong> or a stuffed animal to show how big your baby has grown during the first year.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>9. Make handprint and footprint memories</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another baby first I totally failed at during my maternity leave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I got the footprints in the baby book, but I never did any special hand or footprint crafts. Use <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=baby+handprint+footprint+keepsake+kit&amp;crid=2KW5VFVCY5F5L&amp;sprefix=baby+handprint%2Caps%2C114&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=51c40a06473a08269d1c3d5815e5f381&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">this</a></span></span></strong> to capture those memories or try different crafts for each holiday during baby&#8217;s first year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Parenting tip:</strong> Take your baby book to the hospital with to get those tiny hand and footprints logged on day one.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Related: <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/essentials-hospital-bag/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Everything You Need in Your Hospital Bag (opens in a new tab)">Everything You Need in Your Hospital Bag</a></span></span></strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10. Pamper yourself</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a baby is a joyous occasion. But man can it take a toll!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Between many sleepless nights, constant crying, learning to breastfeed, healing properly, and a possible case of baby blues or even postpartum depression, new moms have a lot going on.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, you have someone who completely depends on you for everything. But that doesn&#8217;t mean you shouldn&#8217;t take a little time for yourself. Enlist the help of your husband or family members to get some alone time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use this precious time to work on your mental health. Stay off of social media. Get out of the house and get some fresh air. Even a simple afternoon nap can help with symptoms of sleep deprivation.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>11. Go for your postpartum checkup</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Again, don&#8217;t neglect your own health while taking care of your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You will have a six-week checkup while you&#8217;re on maternity leave. It is important that you go to this appointment. They will check to make sure you are healing properly, have no abnormal bleeding or swelling, and check for signs of postpartum depression.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, if you have any problems before the six weeks, call your doctor to make an appointment immediately.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="400" height="276" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/things-to-do-on-maternity-leave-with-baby-3-1.jpg" alt="woman having a coffee watching her baby in a stroller" class="wp-image-8184" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/things-to-do-on-maternity-leave-with-baby-3-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/things-to-do-on-maternity-leave-with-baby-3-1-300x207.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <strong><a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/a-mother-taking-care-her-baby-in-a-stroller-6849511/" target="_blank" aria-label="RODNAE Productions (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">RODNAE Productions</a></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What to do when bored on maternity leave?</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>12. Binge watch your favorite shows and movies</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Between long days, sleepless nights, and learning how to take care of your baby, there is a lot of time spent on your couch while you&#8217;re on maternity leave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It actually makes the perfect opportunity to binge watch some of your favorite shows or catch up on the movies you missed while you were pregnant.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best thing is when you have a newborn you don&#8217;t have to worry about the language in the shows you&#8217;re watching. So go through your to-be watched list before you&#8217;re watching Baby Shark on repeat.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="600" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Things-to-Do-on-Maternity-Leave-with-Baby-1.jpg" alt="things to do on maternity leave with baby: mom holding her baby" class="wp-image-8177" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Things-to-Do-on-Maternity-Leave-with-Baby-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Things-to-Do-on-Maternity-Leave-with-Baby-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>13. Listen to a podcast</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maternity leave is the perfect time to find a new parenting podcast. Or binge your favorite true crime podcast.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best part of listening to a podcast is being able to put in ear buds and not bothering your newborn while they sleep, especially if they are sleeping on you.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>14. Listen to audio books or read</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another option besides podcasts is listening to audio books. Or you could opt to read.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Audio books are nice when you are doing a million things and don&#8217;t have any extra time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But since my little one wanted held at nap time, I got a few books crossed off my to be read pile while I was on maternity leave.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>15. Join a baby group</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Baby groups are a great way to get a change of scenery and meet other new mothers. You might have a mommy and me group in your local area.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you can&#8217;t find one, you could always start one. Local mom or baby groups can be found online in your area. You can meet up with a few fellow moms from there and make some local mom friends.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Other fun things to go to get baby accustomed to the outside world:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Take baby swimming</li>

<li>Join a stroller walking group</li>

<li>Participate in music classes</li>

<li>Go to library story time</li>

<li>Visit the zoo</li>

<li>Check out a children&#8217;s museum</li>
</ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>16. Go to a coffee shop</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With all the things to do on maternity leave with baby, one of them needs to be taking time for yourself.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Head out to your local coffee shop and order the most deluxe item you can think of. Make it an extra special treat just for you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of course, you can always take your little one on this adventure for a change of scenery.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>17. Visit relatives</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While you&#8217;ll probably have many visitors while you&#8217;re home, it&#8217;s a great time to get out of your house and visit family.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe it&#8217;s family that couldn&#8217;t make the trip to visit you or even a mini vacation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just make sure to make frequent stops, if you&#8217;re driving. Little ones shouldn&#8217;t be in their car seat for longer than two hours at a time (<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/9-car-seat-factsheet-2019-09-09-1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="source (opens in a new tab)">source</a></span></span>). And you should stretch your legs often to ward off circulation problems.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>18. Have a date night</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It might be hard during those first days to even think about leaving your little one for a date night. But it is so important for you and your spouse to reconnect during this time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s also good for you to have a little time away from your baby, even if for an hour or two.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you don&#8217;t want to be away that long or don&#8217;t have anyone you can trust to watch your baby, plan a date night at home. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are so many things you can do after your baby is in bed: watch a movie, have an indoor picnic, share a glass of wine and talk about something besides the baby.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>19. Create a photo album</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All those photos you&#8217;ve been taking should be on display.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the free time you have while you&#8217;re on maternity leave, you can make a <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.mixbook.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" aria-label="beautiful photo album (opens in a new tab)">beautiful photo album</a></span></span></strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you have enough time, you may even try your hand at <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=scrapbooking+albums+for+baby&amp;crid=26SRTPJL2M1HV&amp;sprefix=scrapbooking+albums+for+baby%2Caps%2C95&amp;linkCode=ll2&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=e7d0fc0af8094a63ee72342b931bef57&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" aria-label="scrapbooking (opens in a new tab)">scrapbooking</a></span></span></strong>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>20. Create a time capsule</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want memories that are more than just pictures, consider creating a time capsule of these first few weeks of your baby&#8217;s life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The little things like your baby&#8217;s hospital bracelet and hat, their coming home outfit, their locks of hair, their first lovey, their first pair of shoes. Anything that won&#8217;t fit in their baby book or a scrapbook can easily be held in <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/Lillian-Rose-Large-Twinkle-Keepsake/dp/B09JBCNGNS?crid=2V49BE867985M&amp;keywords=twinkle+twinkle+little+star+baby+memory+box&amp;qid=1679627680&amp;sprefix=twinkle+twinkle+little+star+baby+memory+box%2Caps%2C93&amp;sr=8-5&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=f21a15ae10452bae9af633a015dc8a4c&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" aria-label="one of these (opens in a new tab)">one of these</a></span></span></strong>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>21. Start a new hobby</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While you only have a limited time while you&#8217;re on maternity leave, you may find it hard to be at home all day.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if nothing else on this list of things to do on maternity leave with baby has spoken to you, it may be time to start a new hobby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You could journal, start a blog, draw, create a craft, bake, work out, or start a side hustle. This is the perfect time to find something you can do for yourself that is not all about motherhood.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Enjoy this special time with your baby, but don&#8217;t lose who you are.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What to do to prepare for going back to work?</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>22. Talk to HR</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Human resources vary by company. So be sure to discuss your maternity leave with your HR representative before leaving to deliver your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They may need you to check-in weekly to give updates, they may need you to send in payment for your insurance while you&#8217;re out, or they may just have you call the week before you return.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Know what is expected of you well before your due date, so you don&#8217;t forget if you have to leave in a rush.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>23. Set up childcare</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The closer you get to the end of your maternity leave, the more important daytime childcare becomes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You have a few options: daycare, friends or family, a nanny, or even becoming a SAHM.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just don&#8217;t wait until it&#8217;s too late to plan for this, as it&#8217;s going to be harder to find the option that you love.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You should also consider a backup plan, in case your little one is sick, or your childcare provider is sick.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Related: <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;"><a class="ek-link" href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/stay-at-home-mom-benefits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Benefits of Being a Stay-at-Home Mom (opens in a new tab)">Benefits of Being a Stay-at-Home Mom</a></span></span></strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>24. Stockpile breastmilk and learn to use your breast pump</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don&#8217;t need a huge stockpile of breastmilk before returning to work. But you should have enough to feed your baby for a couple of days. And it&#8217;s always better to be safe than sorry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whoever is watching your baby during the day may not ration the milk properly. You may not be able to pump as much at work due to stress or anxiety. And your supply may decrease once you are away from your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, it&#8217;s always good to have that stockpile to fall back on.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You also want to make sure you are familiar with your pump before heading back to work.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s stressful enough being away from your baby for the first time. You want to have your first day back to work go as smoothly as possible.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>25. Babyproof your home</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your new baby won&#8217;t be mobile for quite a while. But if you haven&#8217;t done anything to baby proof your home, spending time doing so before you go back to work is going to be one less thing on your to-do list.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Things to consider when babyproofing your home:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What does the hospital usually provide after birth?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are you nearing the end of your pregnancy and wondering what exactly you need to pack and how to plan for your hospital stay?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This guide on <strong>what do hospitals provide for newborns</strong> will review the services you will receive in the hospital, the stuff they give you to take home, the stuff you have to give back, the stuff to make mom more comfortable, and a short list of the stuff you need to bring yourself.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If this is your first baby, this experience can be overwhelming and maybe even a little scary. The more you know about what to expect during a hospital birth and what to bring with you, the more in control you will feel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just take some deep breaths, and work with your birthing partner and medical staff to get through.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Good luck and enjoy these last few moments before your baby comes!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:18px"><em>“This post may contain affiliate links, which means I receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase using this link. Please see my disclosure for more details.”</em></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="268" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-1.jpg" alt="woman in hospital bed" class="wp-image-7191" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-1-300x201.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <strong><a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/photo-of-woman-lying-in-hospital-bed-3769151/" target="_blank" aria-label="Andrea Piacquadio (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">Andrea Piacquadio</a></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What Do Hospitals Provide for Newborns: The Services You Receive</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every hospital is different, so if you have questions, make sure you ask. And don&#8217;t forget to sign up for a hospital tour. It will make the day of your delivery go a lot smoother for new parents if you know a little about what to expect when you get there.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hospital Room/Delivery Room</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During your time in the hospital, you could be in one of their private rooms or a shared hospital room to use as your labor room. Then you may actually be moved to a separate delivery room (or an ER, if you are having a cesarean section). In some hospitals, you may actually have a private room that doubles as the delivery room, making your hospital stay a little less stressful.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Rooming-In/Nursery</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once your baby is born, you may be able to take advantage of room sharing. This is more common these days, especially if your hospital is part of the <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a href="https://www.unicef.org/documents/baby-friendly-hospital-initiative" target="_blank" aria-label="baby-friendly hospital initiative (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">baby-friendly hospital initiative</a></strong></span></span>. This initiative provides support for mothers to successfully breastfeed their babies, one of which is to practice rooming-in 24 hours a day. Usually, they place a very tall bassinet near your hospital bed to make it easier to reach your baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, that first night after giving birth, you may be completely exhausted and just want some sleep. There&#8217;s no shame in that, and your hospital should have a nursery available where you can send the baby for a few hours while you get a good night&#8217;s sleep.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>NICU</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">NICU stands for neonatal intensive care unit. It&#8217;s a special part of the hospital that is equipped to care for ill or premature babies. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not all hospitals have this area available. Check with your hospital before giving birth. It&#8217;s fine if they don&#8217;t have one. Just make sure you know where your baby will be cared for in those instances. It is possible that one parent may have to travel along with your newborn, and you may have to remain behind until you are cleared to leave.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hospital Staff</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing that can totally change your delivery experience is the hospital staff. You should be completely comfortable with your OBGYN. If you&#8217;re not, find someone who you can be open and honest with and someone who listens to you. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During labor and even after the delivery of your baby, the delivery nurses and postpartum nurses are going to be your support team. They&#8217;re there to help new moms and newborn babies. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They&#8217;re also the perfect people to designate as the &#8220;bad guy&#8221; if you need some time to yourself while you&#8217;re in the hospital. Family members love to visit new babies and sometimes they overstay their welcome. Just let the medical staff know visiting hours are over, and they&#8217;ll take care of it for you. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Lactation Consultants</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lactation consultants are not part of the traditional hospital staff and some hospitals do not have a lactation consultant on hand. If that&#8217;s the case, you can <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://lactationnetwork.com/request-a-consultant/" target="_blank" aria-label="request a consultation (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link"><strong>request a consultation</strong></a></span></span> with a board-certified lactation consultant.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you plan on breastfeeding, you should take a <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" href="http://milkology.teachable.com/p/breastfeedingclass?affcode=86567_ojkwyhbr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link"><strong>breastfeeding class</strong></a></span></span> and get in contact with a lactation consultant to provide you with the most support during your journey.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="600" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-1.jpg" alt="pregnant woman using a laptop" class="wp-image-7137" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Get the <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" href="http://milkology.teachable.com/p/breastfeedingclass?affcode=86567_ojkwyhbr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">Ultimate Breastfeeding Class</a></span></span></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What Do Hospitals Provide for Newborns: The Stuff You Can Keep!</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Diapers</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hospitals usually have newborn or size 1 diapers available for new babies.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re worried your baby may be smaller than the diapers they have available, they&#8217;ll show you a quick trick of how to fold the diaper over to make it fit your little one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Always, always, always take those diapers home. Any opened packs are fair game.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Wipes</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Diaper wipes are something else you don&#8217;t need to be worried about bringing to the hospital.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Babies go through so many wipes, especially with those first couple of new baby poops. The hospital knows this and are more than happy to provide them during your stay and send you home with any opened packs.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Baby Hat</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Oh, the adorable baby hats!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They put these little hats on your baby once you&#8217;ve completed your initial hour of skin-to-skin contact and they&#8217;ve run all their tests.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Usually, your new baby will wear that hat during his entire hospital stay and you can place it in his baby book once you get home. You may also want to ask for a second one to take home to your pets to get them used to the smell of your new baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A word of caution: I washed my son&#8217;s hat because it was kind of gross, and it came apart in the wash. Fortunately, they had given him two, so the other is still intact. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Baby Wash</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A day or so after your baby is born, the nurses will give your baby his first bath. They <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a aria-label="delay the bath (opens in a new tab)" href="https://childrensmd.org/browse-by-age-group/pregnancy-childbirth/delaying-babys-first-bath/#:~:text=8%20reasons%20why%20doctors%20recommend%20delaying%20a%20newborn%E2%80%99s,Parents%20get%20to%20enjoy%20bathing%20their%20baby%20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">delay the bath</a></strong></span></span> to keep the vernix intact to reduce infection, among other benefits. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They should show you how to properly bath your baby, the best ways to hold him and keep him warm. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They&#8217;re also going to get all those fluids out of baby&#8217;s hair. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And watching the nurse do this horrified me. She scrubbed that little baby&#8217;s head so much, I thought she was going to rub it off. Don&#8217;t worry, the neonatal nurses are used to working with tiny babies and know what they can and can&#8217;t handle, so your baby is in good hands.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you or dad want to bath your baby, just ask. The nurse should be very welcoming of this, and she can give you any pointers she may have.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Formula</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are not planning to give your baby breast milk or if you are having trouble breastfeeding, the hospital will supply formula to your baby and will send you home with a sample.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try as many options as they have available to see which one suits your baby best. My son only liked <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079VPP9MW?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=48fc5b27d5e947174ed994946a6e0b21&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">this one</a></strong></span></span> and had a hard time keeping the others down.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are giving birth in a hospital that is part of the baby-friendly hospital initiative, they support breastfeeding moms, so you&#8217;ll want to make it clear that you are not planning to breastfeed or you&#8217;re okay to supplement with formula.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>6. Bottles/Syringes</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you do leave the hospital with a formula-fed baby, they will provide bottles for newborns.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My plan was to breastfeed, but I was having trouble in the hospital and could only feed my son using a syringe, which they provided. And they sent us home with extra sterile syringes in case we needed them.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>7. Pacifier</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since pacifiers can be a controversial issue, you as the parent should decide whether your new baby is given one in the hospital. One of the major <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/breastfeeding-mistakes/" target="_blank" aria-label="breastfeeding mistakes (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">breastfeeding mistakes</a></strong></span></span> is introducing a pacifier too early, so if you&#8217;re giving birth at a baby-friendly hospital, they will not give your baby a pacifier without your consent.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you do ask for one, it should be a newborn pacifier and you will get to keep it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-2.jpg" alt="newborn in hospital" class="wp-image-7192" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-2.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-2-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <strong><a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/new-born-baby-wrapped-with-cloth-12116876/" target="_blank" aria-label="Isaac Hermar (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">Isaac Hermar</a></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What Do Hospitals Provide for Newborns: The Stuff You Have to Give Back</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>8. Blanket</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That cute new baby blanket you see in every hospital picture: you don&#8217;t actually get to keep that. (Although this may actually depend on the hospital.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not to worry, you probably got plenty of newborn blankets at your baby shower. Just pack one in your car, depending on the time of year. Remember not to put baby in too many layers, so he is safe in the car seat. Just tuck the blanket in around him when he goes outside.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>9. Nasal Aspirator</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once your baby is born (while you are doing skin-to-skin time) the nurse will wipe him down, run tests, administer antibiotic ointment and the vitamin K shot, and possibly use a nasal aspirator to clear any gunk from his airways. They&#8217;ll probably keep one in your room during your stay, in case they need to use it again. It really depends on your hospital if they send this home with you, since it can be sterilized.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10. Hairbrush</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At baby&#8217;s first bath, the nurse will use a <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Scalp-Scrubbie-Sterile-Cradle-Sponge/dp/B005EJ7YH4?keywords=baby+hairbrush+newborn&amp;qid=1669240618&amp;sprefix=baby+hairbr%2Caps%2C91&amp;sr=8-11&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=176b4447bdfe2695c1febf39a940008b&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">special hairbrush</a></strong></span></span> to get the fluids washed from his hair. This brush is great at getting rid of cradle cap, so if they offer you one, go ahead and take it. But they may not, since they can be washed and reused. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="600" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/What-Do-Hospitals-Provide-for-Newborns-1-1.jpg" alt="what do hospitals provide for newborns: baby toes and legs in hospital crib" class="wp-image-7153" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/What-Do-Hospitals-Provide-for-Newborns-1-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/What-Do-Hospitals-Provide-for-Newborns-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>11. Changing Pads</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The hospital has changing pads that are basically large puppy pads, so if anything gets on them, they can be thrown away. And you don&#8217;t have to worry about taking any changing supplies. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They don&#8217;t typically send <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Basics-Leak-proof-Quick-dry-Training/dp/B016C6EJ4S?crid=1TDN0SZ2PWLT1&amp;keywords=puppy+pads&amp;qid=1669240761&amp;rdc=1&amp;sprefix=puppy+pads%2Caps%2C101&amp;sr=8-1-spons&amp;sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&amp;psc=1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=cd14e1fede61c455c681efd52394ff88&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">these pads</a></span></span></strong> home. I did try using them at home and with as many diaper blowouts that happen at home, they&#8217;re not as practical. You can try using <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Waterproof-Changing-Liners-Count/dp/B009UPUJIY?keywords=gerber+changing+pad+liner&amp;qid=1669240679&amp;sprefix=gerber+chaning%2Caps%2C92&amp;sr=8-7&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=a03c246fa72be5848763ad9eab7b7390&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">these</a></strong></span></span> instead, since they&#8217;re washable and they will keep your changing pad mess-free.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>12. Breast Pump</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are planning to breastfeed, I recommend checking with the hospital where you will be giving birth. They should have a breast pump (or a few) on hand for you to try, if you don&#8217;t have one.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;ve already purchased one or received one for free through your insurance company, and you would like instructions on how to use it, then you should bring your own. A lactation consultant will be able to show you how it works.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Otherwise, you can try out what the hospital has and ask for suggestions on which model you should purchase.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They may also provide you with a <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Medela-Manual-Breast-Pump-Set/dp/B0BFJK96CW?crid=U5NM5ZUYEV1D&amp;keywords=manual&amp;qid=1669240908&amp;sprefix=manual+%2Caps%2C88&amp;sr=8-1-spons&amp;sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&amp;psc=1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=1ea53b48c2f27e6163448fdd5461fbf7&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">small manual pump</a></span></span></strong>, which is yours to keep.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-3.jpg" alt="mom and new baby in hospital" class="wp-image-7193" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-3.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-3-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <strong><a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-holding-her-newborn-after-giving-birth-12116866/" target="_blank" aria-label="Isaac Hermar (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">Isaac Hermar</a></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What Do Hospitals Provide for Newborns: The Stuff Just for Mom</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>13. Nursing Pads</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There&#8217;s no telling just how soon your milk will come in. It could be days after you are home from the hospital, or it could start even before the baby arrives.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not to worry, the hospital will have nursing pads and will send you home with some, so you don&#8217;t leak on the way.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use code <strong>SIP50</strong> to get <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://www.breastpads.com/" target="_blank" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">free washable nursing pads</a></span></span></strong>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>14. Nipple Cream</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are a nursing momma, you will soon become best friends with your little tube of nipple cream. It&#8217;s unlikely that your nipples will be chapped while you are in the hospital, but it&#8217;s best to ask for some samples of what they have.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This way you have an idea of what may work for you. And you have some available when you get home from the hospital, if you didn&#8217;t purchase anything previously.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Related: <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/products-breastfeeding/" target="_blank" aria-label="Everything Breastfeeding Moms Need to Succeed (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">Everything Breastfeeding Moms Need to Succeed</a></span></span></strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>15. Nipple Shield</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I will say the nipple shield was my savior when I started my breastfeeding journey, and I give all the credit to one of my nurses at the hospital. She saw I was struggling and offered me a nipple shield, and it changed everything.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might not need a nipple shield to be successful at breastfeeding, so you might want to take the wait-and-see approach before buying one. If you are having trouble breastfeeding while in the hospital, either ask for one or ask if they have anything that could help you (since you may not remember exactly what it is when the time comes).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>16. Peri Bottle</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometime after giving birth, one of the wonderful hospital staff members is going to show you the best way for you to use the bathroom. And it&#8217;s not going to include toilet paper. That&#8217;s where the peri bottle comes in.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The peri bottle they give you at the hospital is great when you&#8217;re just learning what to do, and it doesn&#8217;t really matter if you make a mess. And of course, you get to take it with you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But I suggest only using that thing in the shower (instead of a washcloth) and get this <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.amazon.com/Postpartum-Original-Fridababy-MomWasher-Cleansing/dp/B07TXLZ8MR?crid=54OJEFQEE98L&amp;keywords=peri+bottle&amp;qid=1669241208&amp;sprefix=peri+bottle%2Caps%2C87&amp;sr=8-5&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=469879ea8d0590b62032e745f17ce94a&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">peri bottle</a></strong></span></span> instead. It&#8217;s made to be used upside with a bent nozzle, so you actually hit the parts you&#8217;re aiming for. It&#8217;s something you&#8217;ll come to love, but you don&#8217;t need to haul it to the hospital with you.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>17. Witch Hazel Pads</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Tucks-Cool-Hemorrhoid-Pad-Count/dp/B06ZYLFV8L?crid=2LLJL4WP0YIBW&amp;keywords=tucks+witch+hazel+pads+for+postpartum+care&amp;qid=1669241299&amp;sprefix=tucks+witch+hazel+pads+for+postpartum+care%2Caps%2C80&amp;sr=8-3&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=16de242f45087ccc308b4899a1b80cd8&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" aria-label="Witch hazel pads (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">Witch hazel pads</a></span></span></strong> offer a cooling effect to all your lady parts and any stitches that maybe itchy. Use what the hospital provides and take any leftovers. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>18. Pain Relieving Spray</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Dermoplast-Hospital-Relieving-Irritations-Benzocaine/dp/B073PBPC51?crid=3FJURXBETVA9N&amp;keywords=dermoplast&amp;qid=1669241342&amp;sprefix=dermaplast%2Caps%2C100&amp;sr=8-2&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=c28b8698143d677804cda57c8de264bc&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" aria-label="This spray (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">This spray</a></span></span></strong> is going to be your best friend after a vaginal delivery. I think it works actual miracles. Definitely add it to your postpartum care kit at home, but don&#8217;t be shy about asking for extras in the hospital. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>19. Large Pads</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No need to worry about bringing any pads to the hospital. The hospital staff will provide you with whatever you need, and you can take them home with you. I suggest taking as much as possible because nothing works quite as well as what you use in the hospital. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>20. Mesh Undies</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a aria-label="These (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.amazon.com/Disposable-Postpartum-Underwear-Breathable-Latex-Free/dp/B07THFQS6Y?keywords=mesh+underwear+postpartum&amp;qid=1669241402&amp;rdc=1&amp;sprefix=mesh+un%2Caps%2C93&amp;sr=8-1-spons&amp;sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&amp;psc=1&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;linkId=f7195c74d41f291a842d69cfefeb8ca3&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored" class="ek-link">These</a></span></span></strong> are the least attractive underwear you will ever wear. That being said, these are the best underwear for this time of your life. They are snug without being uncomfortable. They hold the pads in place better than anything else. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And since they&#8217;re disposable underwear, you don&#8217;t have to worry about the mess. You won&#8217;t realize how much you love these until you run out, so take a bunch with you when you leave.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>21. Donut Pillow</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a vaginal delivery, everything is going to be sore. The ride home from the hospital may be quite uncomfortable. I recommend taking a pillow to sit on in the car. But if they offer you a donut pillow, definitely take it. It will ease the pain and discomfort of stitches and hemorrhoids once you&#8217;re home.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>22. Belly Band</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;ve had a cesarean birth or you&#8217;re worried about <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22346-diastasis-recti#:~:text=Diastasis%20recti%20is%20a%20common,bulge%20months%20or%20years%20postpartum." target="_blank" aria-label="diastasis recti (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">diastasis recti</a></span></span></strong> (where your abdominal muscles can split), ask your delivery nurse about a belly band.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s made of a thin, stretchy material that Velcros around the waist. It&#8217;s a great way to support your abdominal muscles and back muscles when healing from childbirth.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>23. Pain Relief</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don&#8217;t have to bring your own pain medication to the hospital. And honestly whatever you bring may not be strong enough to curb the pain.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let the hospital prescribe you something and only use according to the directions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also take note that there may be a pharmacy located in the hospital where you can fill your prescriptions. It&#8217;s a great option so you don&#8217;t have to make any stops on your way home.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-4.jpg" alt="newborn baby in hospital" class="wp-image-7194" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-4.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/what-do-hospitals-provide-for-newborns-4-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo by <strong><a href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/person-covering-infant-with-swaddling-blanket-1557255/" target="_blank" aria-label="Isaac Taylor (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">Isaac Taylor</a></strong></figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading"><strong>What Do Hospitals Provide for Newborns: The Stuff You Need to Bring!</strong></h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Car Seat</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You cannot leave the hospital with a baby without having a car seat properly installed. The nurses will check before they let you leave, so do not forget this! Have your car seat installed and <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><strong><a href="https://cert.safekids.org/get-car-seat-checked" target="_blank" aria-label="checked by a professional (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">checked by a professional</a></strong></span></span> well before your due date, so you know it&#8217;s ready to go.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Birth Plan</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are writing a birth plan, don&#8217;t forget to bring it to the hospital. Make a copy for the nurses and give a copy to your birthing partner, so they can advocate for you. It&#8217;s also a good idea to give a copy to your doctor at your last checkup, so they have a copy on file.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Going-Home Outfits</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some hospitals will provide clothes for the entire time you are in the hospital. You&#8217;ll want to check with your hospital ahead of time, so you know what to pack. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Regardless of what your newborn baby wears in the hospital, you&#8217;ll want to pack a special outfit for when you bring baby home (and a special outfit for you). Maybe it&#8217;s something that matches what you&#8217;re wearing or it&#8217;s something that you had monogrammed. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hospital Bag</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To make sure you have everything packed in your hospital bag, grab <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;" class="ek-underline"><a aria-label="this hospital bag checklist (opens in a new tab)" href="https://artisanal-writer-6998.ck.page/0df8933147" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="ek-link">this hospital bag checklist</a></span></span></strong> for mom, dad and baby. Be sure to bring any comfort items that you use at home that the hospital would not provide. But leave those valuables safe at home. You&#8217;ll have a new little one to carry home when you leave.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Conclusion</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There you have it: everything hospitals provide for newborns after delivery. Be sure to bring a separate bag for everything the hospital gives you. The less you have to bring to the hospital, the better. (It will fill up quickly.) You&#8217;re going to be leaving with one extra person, so you want to pack light and not worry about packing what the hospital will provide for your newborn.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re getting ready for baby’s big debut, but you’re wondering what essential items to pack in your hospital bag. Don’t forget your support person will also need a hospital bag. And the baby will need one as well. It&#8217;s going to feel like you&#8217;re packing as much as a vacation (just without the relaxation). Don’t worry, we have a checklist for you to keep it all straight.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">When should you pack your hospital bag?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, so somewhere between 35-37 weeks is ideal. It gives you enough time to gather the essentials, if you still need to purchase them, and you’re not running the risk of waiting until you’re in labor and throwing a bag together. Plus, it gives you an easy task while waddling through your third trimester. I would suggest helping your support person with their bag as well. Can’t be too overprepared in this situation.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">What essential items do you pack in your hospital bag?</h2>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Mom’s Hospital Bag</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0765XTY5F/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B0765XTY5F&amp;linkId=c7ffb81cc990fce84384955e729e61af" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="283" height="200" class="wp-image-393" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/wristlet.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">ID and Insurance Card</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I recommend getting a <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0765XTY5F/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B0765XTY5F&amp;linkId=c7ffb81cc990fce84384955e729e61af" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="small wristlet (opens in a new tab)">small wristlet</a> to keep your ID and insurance card in, so it doesn’t get lost at the hospital. This one is nice because you can easily secure it in the bag.</p>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Birth Plan</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make 3-4 copies of your birth plan. Give one to the nurse, so she can put it in your file. You can also give one to the doctor. Keep one within reach and make your support person aware of your wishes. Once things get going, you may need someone to advocate for you, so they should know how you want things done. Keep one copy in your bag, as a backup.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N13C8FT/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07N13C8FT&amp;linkId=ce14f42be1c0224188f5d1f652b59fda" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="200" height="276" class="wp-image-400" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/labor-delivery-gown2.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Delivery Gown</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gone are the days you have to deliver your baby wearing a hospital gown. You absolutely can, if you wish. (I did because I didn&#8217;t want to worry about my own clothes would look like after.)  But you can choose to wear you own clothes or none at all (something to think about when you write your birth plan). If you do choose to wear your own clothes, I suggest something soft, loose, and dark colored. This <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07N13C8FT/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07N13C8FT&amp;linkId=ce14f42be1c0224188f5d1f652b59fda" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="delivery gown (opens in a new tab)">delivery gown</a> is perfect, as it has snaps in the back for an epidural, snaps at the shoulder for skin-to-skin and breastfeeding, and a loose front flap for monitoring, exams and delivery.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QF4B547/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07QF4B547&amp;linkId=b3f0949f301efaaf5551bef30a20382e" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="200" height="392" class="wp-image-401" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/labor-delivery-robe.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/labor-delivery-robe.jpg 200w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/labor-delivery-robe-153x300.jpg 153w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Robe</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also gone are the days when you spend your whole hospital stay laboring in bed. Unless you or the baby need monitored, you will most like be allowed to walk the hallways, so you’ll want a <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QF4B547/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07QF4B547&amp;linkId=b3f0949f301efaaf5551bef30a20382e" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="comfy robe (opens in a new tab)">comfy robe</a> for some privacy, especially if you choose to wear the hospital gown (they are not made for pregnant bellies). A robe is also nice to have once the visitors start making their way to see the baby. And you can get one to match your delivery gown!</p>

</div>
</div>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Slippers or Flip Flops</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Again, if you plan on walking the hallways during labor, you’ll want some <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NHFZ7GY/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07NHFZ7GY&amp;linkId=3eeee355330a7a92e66eb5345fa39101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="slippers (opens in a new tab)">slippers</a> you can easily slide on and off. <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P6N37JF/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07P6N37JF&amp;linkId=10863f5b8d1e499f286cb8c145d2b8c3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="Flip flops (opens in a new tab)">Flip flops</a> are great when using the bathroom or if you want to wear them in the shower.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MT7S41B/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B01MT7S41B&amp;linkId=99f61e4db41db6d88c505b421056c097" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="293" height="200" class="wp-image-395" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/labor-delivery-socks.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Non-Slip Socks</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MT7S41B/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B01MT7S41B&amp;linkId=99f61e4db41db6d88c505b421056c097" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="Non-slip socks (opens in a new tab)">Non-slip socks</a> are also great for walking around in the hospital, but I wore mine throughout labor and delivery. It was my comfort item, as I always wear socks. I suggest getting a dark-colored pair, if you plan on wearing during delivery.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071WSL7NM/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B071WSL7NM&amp;linkId=b8c5d58a16047defb6e95bd6c7f173c6" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="221" height="200" class="wp-image-407" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/front-close-sports-bra.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Front Close Sports Bra</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I don’t do anything without a bra. Childbirth was no different. (There is a lot of sweating, as you can imagine.) If you’re a little more well-endowed and want some support or if you’re just not comfortable without one, I suggest getting a <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071WSL7NM/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B071WSL7NM&amp;linkId=b8c5d58a16047defb6e95bd6c7f173c6" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="front close sports bra (opens in a new tab)">front close sports bra</a>. It makes skin-to-skin contact much easier after birth (if that’s something you wish for).</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-3045" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/essential-items-to-pack-in-your-hospital-bag-5.jpg" alt="pair of glasses" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/essential-items-to-pack-in-your-hospital-bag-5.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/essential-items-to-pack-in-your-hospital-bag-5-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Glasses or Contacts</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just like I always wear a bra, I always wear contacts when I know I’m going to be sweating a lot. I don’t want my glasses sliding all over my face. It’s just my personal preference but something for you to think about. Whichever you choose to wear during labor, make sure you take both. This is a momentous occasion; you want to see every minute of it.</p>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Hair Ties or Clips</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I feel like I&#8217;m on repeat, but labor and delivery is a sweaty process, so you’re going to want to keep your hair out of the way. Get a <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DFSHD5O/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B00DFSHD5O&amp;linkId=df45f373560f9637b369a5eca7eb3371" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="hair tie (opens in a new tab)">hair tie</a> that doesn’t pull or knot easily and one that you’ll be comfortable resting your head against. <div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003J7MNCO/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B003J7MNCO&amp;linkId=00fbe78d6e3f1a22e35d17008232ea9e" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="283" height="200" class="wp-image-423" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/tennis-balls.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Tennis Ball (or other pain-relieving device)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a personal preference and something I found very helpful during my childbirth class. The instructor had our partners rub different items on our backs to massage them. The ones that worked best for me were a <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003J7MNCO/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B003J7MNCO&amp;linkId=00fbe78d6e3f1a22e35d17008232ea9e" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="tennis ball (opens in a new tab)">tennis ball</a> and a paint roller (of all things). So you can bet I brought both to the hospital. Turns out the <a class="ek-link" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003J7MNCO/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B003J7MNCO&amp;linkId=00fbe78d6e3f1a22e35d17008232ea9e" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow" aria-label="tennis ball (opens in a new tab)">tennis ball</a> worked the best by just sticking it between my back and the bed. It spent a good chunk of time there while I was in labor, and it remained there for the entire delivery. Find what works for you, and make sure to pack it!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SNR4P4B/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=seasonsinpare-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07SNR4P4B&amp;linkId=44ec685be712155f9e0fafa95320340d" target="_blank" rel="rel=nofollow noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="290" height="250" class="wp-image-150" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/water-bottle.jpg" alt="essential items to pack in your hospital bag" /></a></figure>
</div>

<h3 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Water Bottle</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The hospital provides you with these items as well. That’s why you were smart and packed an extra drawstring bag. Good thinking momma!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There you have it. All the essential items to pack in your hospital bag, your partner&#8217;s bag, and your brand new baby&#8217;s bag. Good job momma! You got this.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What do I need to know if I&#8217;m having a baby during Covid?</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I found out I was going to be a first-time mommy in mid-2019, I couldn’t have been more excited. We planned for this, and it was really happening! What we never could have planned for was having a <strong>baby during Covid</strong> and dealing with events would change life as we knew it in the blink of eye.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My beautiful baby boy was due in the spring of 2020, and like any expecting momma, I was looking forward to the baby shower, sharing these special moments with family and friends, those oh so adorable pregnancy and new baby photos, and having everyone welcome my little one to the world. It was disheartening, to say the least, when one thing after another was not turning out even remotely as expected.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you’re having your first little bundle of joy or you are a seasoned momma, there are some things you need to be prepared for before your due date. (As if moms don’t have enough on their plate already.) Find out how these changes may affect you and things you can do to make the best of this situation.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Prenatal appointments have changed when having a baby during Covid</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When I became pregnant, my husband was at every prenatal appointment. He got to see our little guy on the screen during the first ultrasound and hear his heartbeat for the very first time. By the middle of our third trimester, he was no longer allowed to be with me.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More than likely you will be going to your appointments alone. You will be asked to wear a mask. You will have your temperature checked and will be asked a series of covid-related questions. Some appointments may even be virtual.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have your husband (or support person) wait in the car while you attend your appointment. This allows you someone to share any information you received immediately, before baby brain kicks in and you forget everything.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re having an ultrasound, ask the technician if you can video chat with your husband, so you can share the experience together. If that’s not acceptable, see if they will allow you to video the experience so you can share it later.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Please do not let the pandemic keep you from getting your prenatal care.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5661" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/baby-during-covid-2.jpg" alt="" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/baby-during-covid-2.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/baby-during-covid-2-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Virtual showers are the newest way to celebrate</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My baby shower was scheduled for the week after the world shut down. Zoom calls weren’t a thing yet, and we were not prepared to go virtual.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until states start allowing large gatherings again, an in-person shower may not be possible.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You could opt to have a small get together, just the nearest and dearest.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or go virtual. Even if you opt for a few in-person attendees. That allows you to put someone in charge of the tech stuff, and set up a Facebook live or Zoom conference. We’ve been using the virtual platforms for quite a while now, so most people are good to go! Have your tech person get in touch with anyone who may need some help getting set up.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5674" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-15.jpg" alt="couple with newborn baby in hospital" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-15.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-15-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Plan for only one support person (if any) when having a baby during Covid</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My husband and my mom were supposed to be in the delivery room. I’ll tell you… my mom was none too happy when we found out we were only allowed one person. I was one of the lucky ones though, as some states were allowing no one but the mom-to-be.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe you’re in the same boat. You wanted your husband, your mom, your sister, your grandma. Anyone to give you the most support.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Or maybe you wanted a professional to give you the support you need and were planning on hiring a doula.  </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hopefully by now all states have opened the delivery room to allow you at least one support person. Choose this person wisely. You want someone who will keep you calm and help you through those contractions. You also want someone who will advocate for your and knows the details of your birth plan.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you still feel a doula is the best support for you, you may be able to find someone who is willing offer their services virtually.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5667" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-8.jpg" alt="two people carrying red duffle bags" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-8.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-8-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />
<figcaption>Photo by <strong><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/two-person-carrying-duffel-and-backpack-1986996/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Dids (opens in a new tab)">Dids</a></strong></figcaption>
</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Bring everything you and your person will need into the hospital</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once we were admitted to the hospital, we were not allowed to leave our room. We couldn’t leave our room to walk the halls, to go the vending machine or the cafeteria. So, we certainly couldn’t go back to our car or our home.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the restrictions on food may be lifting, walking the halls still might not be an option. And it’s certainly easier to make trips out to your car while you’re in the different stages of labor. Because you don’t need your breastfeeding pillow before you’ve given birth. It’s just not an option right now.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Knowing this going in at least lets you prepare. Bring your hospital bag, your support person’s hospital bag, and the baby’s bag. Bring your car seat as well. You may want to call ahead to see if the hospital has birthing balls or breastfeeding pillows. The less items you have to carry in, the better.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you still feel you’re carrying enough for a small army, ask at check-in for a cart. They may be able to accommodate you.</p>

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Make arrangements for older siblings/pets</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This didn’t affect me personally, as this was my first child. However, realize that if your husband is your support person, he will not be able to run home to check on things.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This may mean that you want a different support person, if your husband is the best option for your family at home.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5672" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-13.jpg" alt="covid 19 blood test" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-13.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-13-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>6. Covid screening/testing</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My husband and I both had our temperatures checked and answered covid-related questions. However, we weren’t actually tested for Covid.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every hospital is different. If you are tested for Covid and found to be positive, your hospital stay will look quite different than what you were expecting. Just know that they are doing the best to protect you and your baby.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5663" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-4.jpg" alt="woman wearing a medical mask" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-4.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-4-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />
<figcaption>Photo by <strong><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-in-white-face-mask-3873193/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Polina Tankilevitch (opens in a new tab)">Polina Tankilevitch</a></strong></figcaption>
</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>7. Prepare to wear a mask during your stay (and delivery)</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We were asked to wear our masks during our stay, if doctors or nurses were present. If it was just us and the baby, they didn’t require a mask. Did this mean I was masked during labor and delivery? Yes and yes, although they were more lenient during delivery (as it was harder to catch my breath, even without the mask).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Again, every hospital is different and every doctor/nurse has their preference. If you are having difficulty breathing, please let the staff know, and they will do their best to accommodate you.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="600" class="wp-image-2632" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Baby-During-Covid-1.jpg" alt="baby during covid: sleeping baby with blue knitted hat" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Baby-During-Covid-1.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Baby-During-Covid-1-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5664" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-5.jpg" alt="granola bars" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-5.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-5-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>8. Bring snacks &#8211; No outside deliveries</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We weren’t allowed trips to the vending machines or the cafeteria, and we couldn’t have any food delivered.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even if this isn’t the case when you go to deliver, it’s always nice to have snacks that you know you will like. And don’t forget snacks for your support person. You’re doing all the hard work, but you don’t want them passing out when you need them the most.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5673" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-14.jpg" alt="woman visiting a woman in hospital" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-14.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-14-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />
<figcaption>Photo by <strong><a class="ek-link" href="https://www.pexels.com/photo/female-patient-visited-by-an-acquaitance-6129435/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="RODNAE Productions (opens in a new tab)">RODNAE Productions</a></strong></figcaption>
</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>9. No visitors when having a baby during Covid</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one hit me hard. This was my first child, and all I wanted was to show him off to the world. There was no waiting room full of people ready to greet him. No photographer was there to capture his first hours. And in my case, the lactation consultants were not considered a priority.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Find a way to share your bundle of joy with your family and friends. Send pictures or do a video chat. Make it as special as you can.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Have your support person taking pictures for you and snap a few yourself. Ask one of the nurses to take a family photo before you leave.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My best advice, if you plan on breastfeeding, is to take a class. If your hospital is offering virtual classes, sign up. If not, there are many online classes available. It will be a huge help! Also, get the number of the lactation consultant the hospital works with. Breastfeeding can be quite the journey, and you will need the support.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Related: <a class="ek-link" href="https://seasonsinparenting.com/breastfeeding-mistakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Breastfeeding Mistakes and How to Fix Them (opens in a new tab)"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span class="ek-underline" style="text-decoration: underline;">Breastfeeding Mistakes and How to Fix Them</span></span></a></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This probably isn’t how you expected to welcome your little one, but take your hospital stay to really enjoy your time as a family and get to know this new little person.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-5670" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-11.jpg" alt="woman in hospital bed" width="400" height="268" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-11.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-11-300x201.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>10. No walking the halls</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my labor and delivery class, they showed videos of women laboring while walking the halls of the hospital, and I thought oh that’s nice, we’ll do a couple laps and work that baby down. (How naïve I was.)</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t expect to be able to spend much time out of your hospital room. Do bring a robe and your own birthing gown, if you want to be more comfortable.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="267" class="wp-image-5669" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-10.jpg" alt="nighttime photo of hospital" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-10.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-10-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

</figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>11. Shorter hospital stay when having a baby during Covid</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After you deliver, if you and the baby are healthy, you will most likely be asked if you would like to be discharged early.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hospitals are doing their best to reduce the risk of Covid to other patients. However, if you do not feel well enough to leave or you need more breastfeeding support, don’t feel pressured to leave early. The staff is there to support you.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="400" height="271" class="wp-image-5671" src="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-12.jpg" alt="person in wheelchair in hospital" srcset="https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-12.jpg 400w, https://seasonsinparenting.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/baby-during-covid-12-300x203.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" />

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>12. Ask for a cart or assistance when being discharged</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ok, remember all that stuff you had to haul into the hospital for you, your support person, and the baby. Now it’s time to haul it all back out. Oh, and you have another person tagging along. Not to mention, you may have stitches and are unable to carry anything heavier than the baby.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just as you had one trip to bring it all in, you get one trip out as well. Ask for a cart or assistance, and if you need one, ask for a wheelchair.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>13. Coming home</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, you made it through the birth experience and had a baby during Covid! It is entirely up to you what happens next.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do you want all the people that couldn’t be at the hospital waiting for you at your home? Do you want a few close family and friends there for a little while (people you’re able to tell when you’re ready for a nap)? Or is it going to be just your new little family for a while?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whichever you choose, plan for it ahead of time, and make your wishes known. You don’t need the extra stress of unexpected visitors as soon as you walk in the door.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is advised that people wear masks and social distance with your new little one. Talk to the nurses and your pediatrician to make your most well-informed decision.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>14. Follow up with your pediatrician and OBGYN</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t let the pandemic keep you from getting the care you and your baby need.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set up the first follow up appointment with your pediatrician before you leave the hospital or shortly after you get home. If you are discharged early, this appointment may be required sooner than if you have a full hospital stay.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Schedule and keep your six-week checkup with your OBGYN. They will need to check any stitches and make sure you are healthy and progressing well.</p>
