1. The Crystal Palace

My favorite dining option for toddlers is The Crystal Palace, located at the end of Main Street. While this may sound like a super fancy restaurant to be taking a toddler, it’s actually one of the best character meals in Magic Kingdom.

You can meet your favorite characters from Winnie the Pooh while eating your meal. It’s a buffet, so there are plenty of options for both adults and young children, even the picky eaters. Be sure to make your dining reservation in advance as it can book up quickly in the busy months.

2. Pinocchio Village Haus

The Pinocchio Village Haus is a quick-service restaurant located in Fantasyland, right near all the best toddler rides. They have flatbread pizzas and salads; but also have turkey sandwiches and chicken strips for the kids.

If there is one available, you can get a table right above the entrance of it’s a small world and wave at all the park guests as they enjoy the ride.

3. Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe

This is a quick-service restaurant located in Frontierland, and I have never not seen this place packed.

They cover a wide variety of tastes with cheeseburgers, tacos, nachos, and fajitas for the adults. While kids can enjoy burgers, tacos, mac and cheese, and even PB&J uncrustables. Those are perfect when you’re completely out of ideas for your picky eater.

4. Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe

Cosmic Ray’s is a quick-service restaurant located in Tomorrowland. This restaurant always has long lines, but they move quickly, and you can always find a seat. It also has the bonus of an out-of-this-world (animatronic) DJ, Sonny Eclipse.

Mostly burger options for the adults, but kids can get a grilled chicken salad, chicken strips, or mac and cheese. The restaurant is also huge, giving kids a chance to run around a little, while you enjoy the a/c.

5. Casey’s Corner

Casey’s Corner is located on the corner of Main Street. They are a quick-service restaurant, but with no dining inside. They offer hot dogs and corn dog nuggets, with a side of fries or an orange.

The best part about Casey’s is that they are open until the park closes. So, if you missed out on a meal earlier in the day, or if you have a hangry toddler on the way out of the park, stop by Casey’s for a quick bite.

How to Navigate Magic Kingdom with Toddlers

Magic Kingdom Park is actually the smallest of the four main parks at Disney World, but it might take you two days to see everything with your toddler.

The best way to navigate it is to plan ahead. Know which rides you want to go on, and look at a map before you go, so you have a basic idea of the layout of the park.

I recommend getting there as early in the morning as possible, to avoid long lines and beat the heat. Take water breaks often and try to stick to your daily meal and nap schedule, if possible. Use a stroller, so your little one can nap in the park, or go back to your hotel midday for some rest and a/c.

If your little one is interested, Magic Kingdom is the best place to meet the princesses: Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Tiana, and Jasmine (and Aladdin). You can also find Mickey, Donald, Daisy, Winnie the Pooh, and Tigger around the park.

Animal Kingdom: Wild Adventures for Little Ones

A lot of people think of Animal Kingdom as just another zoo, but it’s quite a unique animal experience where you can learn more about nature and conservation, while enjoying some fun attractions.

Although the list of rides isn’t very long, there are plenty of animal trails to explore, and many cast members are available to discuss the animals and their behaviors. And they are great with little ones! If your child loves animals, this park should be at the top of your list of things to do on your Disney vacation.

1. Pizzafari

Pizzafari is a quick-service restaurant located on Discovery Island. With bright colors to catch your toddler’s attention, and plenty of yummy toddler-friendly food, this is a great restaurant option for families with young children.

Pizzas, pasta, mac and cheese, and PB&J uncrustables make up the kids’ menu. Oranges and graham crackers top the list of yummy sides to complete the meal.

2. Restaurantosaurus

This is a quick-service restaurant located in none other than DinoLand USA. From the outside, this restaurant always looks like it’s closed to me (how it’s tucked away). But it’s open and it’s usually busy.

Cheeseburgers and foot-long hot dogs make up the adult menu. For kids, they have cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, and mac and cheese.

3. Tusker House

Head over to Tusker House located in Africa for breakfast, lunch, or dinner with Donald Duck and his Disney friends. Decorated as a Harambe marketplace with artifacts lining the walls, you’ll feel as if you stepped into a safari adventure.

This restaurant offers a buffet meal with character dining, so you’re sure to find plenty of delicious food for your entire family while the kids get to meet their favorite Disney characters.

4. Yak & Yeti Restaurant

For a delicious Asian meal and specialty drinks, check out the Yak & Yeti Restaurant. While it may not look like your typical toddler hangout, the kids’ menu is one of the largest around, so finding something for all your picky eaters should be no problem.

If you can’t get into Yak & Yeti, try the quick-service option located nearby – Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes. The menu doesn’t compare to the table-service restaurant, but it’s a good option if you’re looking for a quick bite.

5. Rainforest Cafe

The Rainforest Cafe is actually located just outside the park, so know that if you leave for lunch, you’ll have to go back through security to re-enter the park. It’s one of my favorite places to eat at Animal Kingdom, and we usually make a reservation for just prior to park close (to beat the crowds).

Enter a jungle-themed restaurant with animatronic animals and an occasional thunderstorm. It’s already loud, so toddlers being toddlers is just fine here!

The kids’ menu is quite large with various items, so you’re little one should have no problem finding something they’ll eat. With the picture menu, my son showed us exactly what he wanted (without any coaxing from us).

How to Navigate Animal Kingdom with Toddlers

Animal Kingdom is the largest of all the parks. So, while your little one may be enjoying a shaded ride, you’re walking, pushing the stroller, and sweating like mad. Be sure your family stays hydrated and take breaks throughout the day.

Take advantage of the Rider Switch program for the rides where your toddler doesn’t meet the minimum height requirement.

Arrive at Animal Kingdom early in the morning to get the most out of your day. This park closes early (usually around 7 in the busier months). You want to be sure you have enough time to do everything you want.

Animal Kingdom is also the only park where you can meet Mickey and Minne together. Donald, Daisy, Chip, and Dale are others you can connect with.

Epcot: A World of Exploration for Toddlers

Epcot is known for being the educational park of Disney World, and for that, I think a lot of people overlook it. It’s also the most culturally diverse of all the parks, so there is a lot for your little one to experience.

I would probably rate this as the second-best Disney World Park, except that there is a lot of walking and once you get to World Showcase, there’s not much for toddlers to see.

1. Garden Grill Restaurant

The Garden Grill Restaurant is located in World Nature and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner with your favorite mischievous chipmunks: Chip & Dale and some of their Disney friends. Each meal is family-style, with plenty of options, so everyone in your party is sure to find something they love.

One of the best things about this restaurant (besides the character meal) is that the entire restaurant slowly rotates while you eat, so you are treated to changing landscapes while you dine.

2. Akershus Royal Banquet Hall

This restaurant is located in the Norway Pavilion of World Showcase. It offers character dining for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are served family-style and are all-you-can-eat.

While dining in this medieval castle, you’re going to be meeting Disney princesses during your meal. I like this location better than Cinderella’s Royal Table (at Magic Kingdom) because it’s slightly cheaper, there’s more toddler-friendly food, and they have more characters. Always make advanced dining reservations for this restaurant!

3. Connections Eatery

For a quick-service meal, try Connections Eatery in World Celebration. This restaurant recently got an overhaul, and it’s offering new menu items with inspiration from French, Italian, and Asian cuisine.

It’s great for a quick bite and super easy to find. And the kids’ menu offers simple items like cheeseburgers, chicken strips, and pizza.

4. Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria

When you’re looking for a toddler-friendly restaurant while touring World Showcase, check out Via Napoli. There are so many amazing restaurants located throughout World Showcase that you can’t really go wrong, especially when having a romantic dinner. But for picky eaters, the choices become very limited (and some are just too pricey for kids).

Here you can find a variety of Italian foods and delicious desserts. Kids can choose from pizza, spaghetti, or chicken tenders.

5. Space 220 Restaurant

Space 220 is a newer restaurant located in World Discovery taking you aboard a space station to dine 220 miles above Earth. Viewports offer amazing daytime and nighttime panoramic views.

The menu is quite literally out of this world having incredible options for lunch and dinner. Kids have a choice of spaghetti, chicken tenders, mac and cheese, cheeseburger and fries, or salmon plus a tasty dessert. Make a dining reservation early and expect your little one to talk about their space meal well after you return home.

How to Make the Most of Epcot with a Toddler

To make the most of your time, plan to visit Epcot when they are not holding a festival. They have an Arts Festival, Flower and Garden Festival, and Food and Wine Festival. People flock to these festivals, so it’s harder to navigate with a stroller. They also have pop-up kitchens, so people are in the streets buying food and looking for a place to sit and enjoy their meals. It can get crazy!

Take advantage of the Kidcot Fun Stops in World Showcase to allow your toddler to interact with people of different cultures. Each station has a postcard that someone from that country will sign hello in their native language, along with other facts about the country.

This is another park where you may consider arriving early and leaving midday to get a break from the heat and all the walking. Although this park has some great shows, with good a/c.

Don’t forget to check out the characters while you’re here. Donald Duck is in Mexico. Anna and Elsa are located in Norway. Mulan is in China. Snow White is in Germany. Jasmine is in Morocco. Princess Aurora and Belle and located in France. Winnie the Pooh and Alice can be found in the United Kingdom. Minnie Mouse, Pluto, and a few others can be found throughout the park.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Adventures Await

Hollywood Studios, unfortunately, ranks at the bottom of the list of the best Disney Park for toddlers.

Although they do have a bunch of shows for kids, including Disney Junior Play and Dance! and the Frozen Sing-Along, they don’t have many rides for little kids. However, if your kiddo is a fan of Woody and Buzz, you have to check out Toy Story Land. You can meet characters and feel like you’re the size of one of Andy’s toys.

For parents and older children who are fans of Star Wars, Hollywood Studios is the best park for you. Just know that your little ones won’t have much to experience at Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.

For a quick and tasty meal, head over to PizzeRizzo located on Grand Avenue. With assorted pizzas and subs, it’s the perfect place to sit, cool off, and recharge with a quick lunch.

It definitely gets more busy right at lunchtime, so get there a little early or later in the afternoon to avoid the lines and grab a table.

2. Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano

For a more upscale Italian meal, check out Mama Melrose’s located on Grand Avenue. They have delicious options for adults and a wide selection of Italian meals for kids, including pizza (if that’s all they’re willing to eat).

Get your dining reservations early, as it does book up quickly and you may not get in the day of.

3. Backlot Express

Another terrific quick-service option is the Backlot Express located near Echo Lake. They have all kinds of flavors on the adult menu: Cuban, Southwest, and Teriyaki. For the kids, they have chicken strips, mac and cheese, and even uncrustables. You get to enjoy some savory dishes, knowing there is something your kiddo will enjoy.

This restaurant has three levels of dining, with the order window located on the bottom floor. So, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a table, but look for the ramps, if you’re pushing a stroller.

4. Hollywood & Vine

Head over to Hollywood & Vine located near Echo Lake for character dining with Disney Junior characters for a breakfast buffet. Lunch and dinner do not disappoint with Minnie Mouse and friends hosting their own character meals.

This is another dining option where you must make reservations in advance. Due to the character meet and greets, these reservations go fast.

5. Woody’s Lunch Box

For a super-quick meal while you’re in Toy Story Land, head over to Woody’s Lunch Box. I say it’s super-quick because it’s a walk-up window with outdoor seating. They only offer two breakfast items, and a few sandwiches for lunch and dinner.

It’s a great place to stop when you’re making your way through Toy Story Land, especially on a hot day when you’re looking for some shade.

How to Make the Most of Hollywood Studios with a Toddler

Have an idea of what your toddler is interested in before going to Hollywood Studios.

Will they enjoy sitting through the shows, which ones? If not, that’s going to cut out a lot of the things you have available for younger children.

Are they big into Toy Story? You’ll spend a lot of time in Toy Story Land. It is HOT there! Take plenty of water, a fan, and a stroller with a canopy.

Go early to enjoy the rides your toddler can ride or skip Fantasmic! (the firework show) and enjoy the rides at night. Not only can you avoid some of the long lines, but it’s also a different experience with the lights at night.

Beyond the few rides and shows, there are plenty of characters to meet at Hollywood Studios: Mickey and Minnie, Disney Junior stars, Olaf, Toy Story characters, Pixar characters, and Star Wars characters.

Tips and Strategies for Navigating the Best Disney Park for Toddlers

Should I bring my own stroller or rent one in the park?

I would recommend bringing your own stroller to the park, rather than renting one from Disney, and here’s why:

1. We were able to use ours at the airport, and it made keeping track of our toddler so much easier.
2. You know your stroller best, so you can easily fold and unfold it like a pro (which you’ll need to do when taking it on Disney transportation).
3. You can take it out of the park each night. When renting from Disney, you have to stand in line each morning and return it when leaving the park. That means carrying your sleepy toddler to the bus and into your hotel room.
4. In-park strollers don’t recline and have minimal shade covering.

However, you do have one other option, and that’s renting a stroller from a local company. Kingdom Strollers offers hotel delivery or airport pickup. These are also more like a stroller you might have at home.

What’s the best way to navigate the parks with a stroller and a young child?

Mostly just be courteous and aware of other people, meaning don’t run over anyone and watch out for other children running in front of you.

If there are sidewalks, drive on the street. There’s more room to maneuver, so you don’t have to worry about squeezing through.

Look for stroller parking signs near ride entrances (or ask a cast member where to park). You can’t leave your stroller just anywhere. It will probably be relocated, and you’ll have a hard time finding it.

Also, be aware that cast members are constantly moving strollers to make room in the walkways, so it might not be where you left it. Get a custom stroller tag, so you can always find it. (The sea of strollers around the carousel is no joke!)

Do all parks have baby care centers and what services do they offer?

All parks do have baby care centers. Check your map (or the app) to find one in each park.

Each baby care center offers a private room to breastfeed, changing tables, restrooms with toddler-sized toilets, a feeding area with highchairs, a small kitchen with microwave and sink, and a room with a table and television. There is also a small store with baby products for sale.

The first aid station is nearby with a nurse and paramedics.

This is also where they take children who become separated from their parents until they are reunited.

What strategies can I use to manage meltdowns or fatigue in the parks?

Try to stick to your home schedule as best you can.

Plan meals at the same time as at home. If you’re still doing naps, either go back to your hotel or have a stroller nap to get some downtime.

Starting your days early in the parks before it gets too hot, and then going back to your hotel for a nap or swim and going back to the park in the evening lets everyone recharge.

When in doubt, get some food and water, find some a/c, and take a break.

Another great way to avoid meltdowns is by planning rest days into your vacation. If you’re going for a week, you could plan to do five parks and two rest days. Enjoy the amenities at your hotel or check out Disney Springs.

We took a rest day the day before we left, so we could spend the day packing and enjoying the resort.

How can I plan my day to accommodate nap and meal times for my toddler?

The best way to accommodate nap and meal times is to plan ahead.

Get on the app a few months in advance and start reviewing restaurants (make those dining reservations early). Book reservations around meal times (trying your best to avoid the lunch rush).

Then check out the map and decide what rides (shows or characters) you absolutely must do. Plan your route from those rides to your meals, so you’re not running all over the park.

You could also choose to go back to your hotel, so your toddler can nap and grab lunch there. The hotels are typically less busy during the day (since everyone is at the parks), so there shouldn’t be much of a wait for lunch.

Are there attractions that might be too intense or scary for toddlers?

There are a few rides (with no height restrictions) that may be too much for kids.

I didn’t even include Haunted Mansion in the list above because it’s at the top of my too scary list for toddlers. The rest are mostly personal preference.

If your kiddo doesn’t like dark rides, they might not enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean, Na’vi River Journey or Frozen Ever After, even though they’re all slow-moving boat rides.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure have larger scenery that might frighten young children.

Mickey’s PhilharMagic and all the fireworks shows can be too loud for some kids.

Just be aware of your child’s tolerance when riding or watching shows, so you can avoid a future meltdown.

Can I use Rider Switch with my toddler on certain rides?

Many of the thrill rides that are not toddler-friendly are part of the Rider Switch program.

If your child does not meet the height requirement, or even if an older child just doesn’t want to ride, parents can use Rider Switch.

Before entering the ride line of the attraction, speak with a cast member that you would like to use the Rider Switch option.

The first party (a parent and any other children choosing to ride) then waits in the standby line, while the second party waits in a designated area. Once the first party is finished, the second parent returns to the Lightning Lane for a shorter wait time.

One person can accompany the second parent when they ride, meaning that an older child (or another adult) can ride twice.

Is it worth getting a park hopper ticket for a toddler?

This actually depends on how you have your trip planned.

If you’re only going for four days, and you’re focusing on one park a day, then it really doesn’t make sense to use a park hopper because you’re going to want to spend as much time enjoying the park that you’re in.

If you have more days planned, then it would make more sense to get a park hopper for your entire family.

On our toddler’s first trip, we went to the parks for five days and had two rest days.

One of the days we went to Magic Kingdom was a Halloween party. Since we didn’t have tickets, we had to leave by six. We left around three and took the monorail to Epcot to meet Pluto (the only character we missed).

We grabbed a quick bite of a Mickey ice cream sandwich then took the Skyliner over to Hollywood Studios to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land and do some shopping before heading back to the resort.

You could also do a quick morning trip at Animal Kingdom and hit another park in the evening, since Animal Kingdom closes early.

It’s definitely worth it, if you have enough time and can travel through the parks quickly.

What are some tips for keeping toddlers entertained in line queues?

Some of the rides actually have in-line entertainment.

Dumbo has an entire play area where you can wait until your party is called. The best part is that it’s air-conditioned and there are seats for parents. (You can access this area even if you’re not riding Dumbo.)

There are also activities in the lines for Winnie the Pooh and Seven Dwarf Mine Train (if your kiddo meets the height requirement).

For lines that don’t have anything included, you can bring small coloring books, stickers, a favorite toy, or even your phone to distract your little one.

Even if the ride line doesn’t have a play area for kids, you can use the decorations to make the time go faster.

In line for Frozen Ever After, we counted the purple lanterns and the green lanterns, then which ones had stars versus a photo of the princesses.

Do your best to find a way to make your surroundings fun. Do voices, have their stuffed animal do a dance, count something wrong or point to the wrong color to get them laughing. They should eventually come around and be less focused on the wait.

Tips for Disney World with Toddlers: Before You Go

1. Download the My Disney Experience App

Before you step foot in any of the Disney theme parks or even check into your Walt Disney World resort hotel, you’re going to want to download the free My Disney Experience App.

This app gives you access to everything Walt Disney World.

You’ll be able to track your hotel and park reservations and make payments for your vacation.

You can book your dining reservations 60 days in advance, so you’re sure not to miss your favorite meals. You can check for dining availability while you’re in any of the Disney parks and make mobile orders.

You can check on wait times for your favorite rides, locate your favorite characters, and find the shortest route to the closest restroom.

You can add things like Genie+ and Lightning Lane purchases once you are on property. And even unlock your hotel room!

It’s a must-have to get the most out of your Walt Disney World vacation.

2. Watch Disney shows

If you’re planning a Disney vacation with your toddler, I’m sure you already watch some Disney shows, whether it’s Disney Junior or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Watching these shows and reading Disney books is a great way to introduce little kids to the characters they could meet.

I also recommend watching YouTube videos about the parks. You can show your kiddo the rides, the characters, the parades, the fireworks, and some of what goes on at the parks.

It’s a great way to get your kid excited for your Disney World trip and gauge their interest in what they might enjoy doing while there.

They’re especially great to get you orientated to Disney World, if you’ve never visited before.

3. Visit a local amusement park

Another great way to get your toddler ready for all the Disney World parks is to go to a local amusement park before your trip.

• You can learn what types of rides they will enjoy. Babies and young toddlers are usually more carefree. Older toddlers and preschoolers start becoming more aware of their surroundings. So dark rides and larger-than-life characters might be more intimidating to them.

• It’s also a good way to get them used to waiting in line. Because it’s not Disney if you’re not waiting in line for something.

• You can practice using your stroller in a park. Maybe you have a very independent toddler who wants no part of the stroller anymore. Take it anyway! (See Tips for Disney World with Toddlers #26.)

• You can practice eating new foods. I don’t think it’s only my toddler who likes what he likes and won’t eat anything else. So, use this trip to try new foods. It will give you an idea of what snacks you’ll need to pack. (See Tips for Disney World with Toddlers #30.)

• You can also use this experience to explain what Disney World is like. When I asked my son if he wanted to go to Disney World, he said no. I came to realize it was because he didn’t know what it was. One day I mentioned going to the parks, and it started to click for him. He associated parks with the playground, and we talked about the carousel we rode at our local amusement park and then he started getting excited.

Your toddler is experiencing everything for the first time, so they might be a little more cautious about new places. But the more information you can give them beforehand, the better the trip will be for them (and you!).

4. Plan your trip

Obviously, you’re going to book your trip well in advance (mostly so you can start saving for it as early as possible).

But you absolutely want to plan it the right way.

• First, plan for the “off” season. While there really isn’t an off season anymore, there are times of the year when it is less busy. Since you have a toddler who is not in school yet, the best time to go would be in September or May, when older kids are still hitting the books. Holidays and spring break are also notoriously busy at Disney World, so avoid those if you can.

• Stay at a fun resort. Staying on Disney property is like staying in the Disney bubble. But even if you choose to stay on property, you have a wide selection of hotel options. While each Disney resort hotel has its own unique theming, the All-Star Resorts offer larger-than-life decor and bright colors that kids will love and also makes for great photo ops.

• Select your theme park tickets. Do some advanced research of the best rides for your family, so you know which Disney parks you want to visit on what day.

• Book dining reservations in advance. If you’re staying on property, you can make dining reservations 60 days in advance (for the length of your trip). Take advantage of this, as some of the more popular restaurants will otherwise be booked (especially character meals). Check out the menu for each of the restaurants, so you have an idea of what your child will eat.

5. Check height requirements

After watching YouTube videos and doing research on the My Disney Experience App, you should have an idea of what rides you and your toddler are interested in.

While you’re doing research, make sure to look at the height requirement of your favorite rides. Disney is known for being a family-friendly park, so that means most rides have no height restrictions. But it will save a vacation tantrum, if you know what your child can ride ahead of time.

6. Go before your toddler turns 3

This tip is for the money-saver in us all. Because children 2 and under are free at Disney.

There is so much for toddlers to do in the parks, so why not take them while they are little, and you can save a lot of money?

Just remember to include them on your dining reservations because they do still need a seat at the table.

And just to clarify, it is 2 and under so you can plan your trip as close to your child’s third birthday as possible.

7. Let Disney know it’s your toddler’s first trip

Disney makes everything a magical experience, including the first time you visit! This is true for everyone (not just toddlers).

Let the cast member know when you book your trip that it will your toddler’s first time visiting Walt Disney World, and they will make a big deal out of it when you arrive at your resort. You should receive a First Time Celebration button. (And they usually write your child’s name on it.)

Wear this button during the length of your vacation to have cast members throughout the parks acknowledging your child’s first trip.

They also have other celebration buttons (birthday, anniversary, I’m celebrating), so be sure to tell the cast member if you are visiting for a special reason.

8. Pack smart

I wanted to title this tip pack light, but I didn’t consider that a very helpful tip.

Depending on how large your party is or how long you are staying, you need to pack for you. (Although, be aware that Disney hotels do have laundry facilities.)

Consider that if you’re flying with a toddler, they can’t carry their own bags. You’ll want the least amount of luggage possible to get through the airports. Use these straps to keep everything together.

When packing your suitcases, use Ziploc bags to separate clothes. Put each day’s outfit in a bag and label it with the day and park. (If you have more than one kiddo, put their names on the bag as well.)

Not only does this keep the clothes organized, but it also saves time getting ready in the mornings. And you can squeeze a lot of air out of the bags to make them fit in your suitcase better.

I also recommend getting packing cubes to organize your suitcase. I was able to fit a week’s worth of toddler clothes into one cube, so I knew I had everything in one place.

One last recommendation is these waterproof bags. They are perfect for carrying wet or soiled clothes during your vacation: wet swimsuits, rain-soaked clothes, and toddler accidents; these bags hold it all.

They’re also a lot bigger than I expected, so you can use them to pack any bottles that may spill in your luggage, and your clothes won’t get ruined.

Tips for Disney World with Toddlers: While Traveling

9. Pack snacks and activities

You could end up with a very cranky toddler, depending on how long you will be traveling.

Pack your little one’s favorite snacks, especially if you’re flying and can’t just make a pit stop. Make sure they eat or drink something during take-off and landing to alleviate any ear pain. (Check out other ways to relieve ear pain when flying.)

Include some fun activities for your little one to do while traveling. We relied on a tablet for this part of the trip. If you’re against that much screen time, try coloring books, water books, sticker books, busy books, or their favorite toys.

10. Use a stroller at the airport

To keep a better eye on your child as you’re rushing through busy airports, strap them in a stroller.

We actually didn’t use the stroller when we left home, but the Orlando airport is very busy, and you’re riding a tram, and you may need to rent a car, and you’re getting your luggage, and going through security, and you may have more bags coming home.

It was so much easier to know he was safe in the stroller, and we could move through the airport a lot quicker.

You will need to close the stroller and run it through the scanner. And when you get to your gate, have them tag it, so you can collect it when you deplane.

11. Book transportation to your resort

Oh, the days of Disney’s Magical Express, picking you up from the airport and collecting your luggage. How I wish it would return!

For now, you have to find your own way to your resort:

• Uber or Lyft – cheapest option but not good for a large group
• Mears Connect drive by Sunshine – bus company that ran Magical Express, now just with a cost, makes multiple stops
• Rental Cars – higher end option but have your own vehicle on property
• Private Vehicle – most expensive option

Car seats are required for children under 5 in Florida. If you want to be certain of the safety of the car seat, I recommend bringing your own.

However, you can book a car seat with your rental car or private vehicle. Uber offers car seats in Orlando for one child. And you don’t need a car seat with Mears Connect.

Tips for Disney World with Toddlers: At the Resort

12. Stay on Disney property

If your budget allows, I suggest staying at a Disney hotel.

As I stated earlier, there are many resorts with many different price points, each with their own special theming. So, you’re sure to find a great atmosphere in your budget.

Each resort has its own pool, restaurant, gift shop, and laundry area. Some offer playgrounds and arcades. And there are always activities going on during the day, maybe even characters to meet.

A huge benefit to staying on property is not having to pay for parking at the parks and being able to quickly get to your hotel for an afternoon nap or swim in the pool (or an outfit change during those super-hot days).

13. Request a pack ‘n play

If your little one is still using a crib at home, you can request a crib (usually a pack ‘n play) at your Disney resort.

Make your request online when you book your trip or ask a cast member when you call to make your reservations. You can also ask for bedrails, if you’re nervous about your little one falling from the bed.

The pack ‘n play was a great place for my kiddo to sleep. We set it up in the sink area (between the sink and the wall safe). There is a curtain to separate the sink/bathroom from the sleeping area. So, we closed that at night to give him his own sleep space.

It was almost like home. The first night took some adjusting to, but after that, he was so tired from the days in the parks that he had no problem falling asleep.

14. Use Disney transportation

If you’re not taking your own car or have a rental vehicle, you’re going to be relying on Disney transportation.

However, even if you do have a vehicle, I still recommend using Disney transportation.

But what is Disney transportation?

There are many ways to get around the Walt Disney World resort (most of which are absolutely free!):

• Buses – There are buses to take you from your hotel to any park, water park, or Disney Springs. You can even take some buses from park to park. Unfortunately, you cannot travel between resorts by bus. This is probably the slowest option of transportation, but you don’t have to do any driving once you’re on vacation, and that is a huge convenience.

• Boats – The Friendship boats are available to take you from Epcot and Hollywood Studios to Disney’s Boardwalk Inn. There is also the Sassagoula River Cruise that takes guests from the Port Orleans Resorts to Disney Springs. The boat rides are free and offer a more unique way to get to different places on property from your hotel.

• Skyliner – The Skyliner is the newest form of transportation that connects four Disney resorts (Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach Resort, and Riveria Resort) to Hollywood and Epcot. It is my understanding that these resorts do not offer buses to those parks, unless the Skyliner is closed due to weather. This is also an amazing way to park hop from Epcot to Hollywood Studios and back. It’s so much quicker than a bus, and you get an amazing view of some of the neighboring resorts.

• Monorail – There are two ways to travel on the monorail system. You can take the monorail between Epcot and Magic Kingdom, again saving more time than taking a bus. Or if you’re staying at one of the resorts surrounding the Seven Seas Lagoon (Contemporary Resort, Grand Floridian and Polynesian Resort), this is the BEST way to travel to the Magic Kingdom.

• Parking Trams – If you do choose to drive yourself to the parks, the parking trams are running again to take you from your car to the front of the park!

• Minnie Vans – This is Disney’s Lyft service, driven by Disney cast members. They are minivans, dressed up with Minnie’s polka dots. This is the only Disney transportation that is not free. They do come with 2 child safety seats, so you can safely get where you need to go quicker.

A few helpful tips for Disney World with toddlers when using Disney transportation:

• You don’t need a car seat on any of the free transportation.
• Your stroller will need to be folded up (on the trams as well). The only time we didn’t have to fold it was on the Skyliner. But we were the only ones in the gondola, and it was a single stroller. Double strollers will need to be folded.
• You may not get a seat. At the end of the day, the buses/boats/monorail will fit as many people as possible, with standing room only. So, while you may get on, you may be standing (unless someone offers you a seat).
• Opt for Disney transportation to Magic Kingdom (even if you have your own car). You must park at the Ticket and Transportation Center at Magic Kingdom, and then take the monorail or a ferry boat to the entrance of the park. You may as well skip all that and take transportation directly from your hotel.
• All Disney transportation is wheelchair accessible. When taking the buses, wheelchairs and electric scooters are the first to board. There is an accessible line for the Skyliner, which stops for easier access.

15. Plan rest days at your resort

The best thing you can do in the middle of your week at Disney is take a rest day or two.

Between spending hours in the parks and ALL THE WALKING, you’re going to need a break so you can keep going. It’s also going to give your kiddos time to recharge.

Sleep in, go to the pool, grab a nap, or take a look around your resort. There are usually activities you can enjoy while spending time there.

You could also hop over to Disney Springs for some shopping and good food.

Or even resort hop. While you can’t use the pools at other hotels, you can enjoy a good meal, check out some animals, or take a tour.

16. Have items delivered to your resort

I already talked about packing smart, and this is an extension of that.

If you don’t have room in your luggage for everything you’ll need, you can ship non-perishables ahead of time.

Just address the label to your name, c/o Your Resort Hotel’s front desk, your arrival date, and the address. Make sure you use a flat-rate box from the post office, so you are not charged by weight.

You can also make a Target run on your way to your hotel, if you have a rental car to grab cheap snacks or extra supplies.

If you can’t drive to the store, set up a grocery delivery to come to your resort hotel. Garden Grocer is the best-known grocery delivery service for Walt Disney World, and since they deliver to bell services, you don’t need to be present to pick up your order. You could also use Amazon Prime or Wal-Mart to deliver your order.

17. Take advantage of in-room babysitting

If you want some time alone, consider hiring an in-room babysitter.

This is a great option if it’s just the two of you with the kids. You can have a nice evening out at one of the amazing restaurants or a late night in the parks.

And your kids get a night of games and activities tailored to them.

You can even use this service if you’re looking for extra help with your kids in the parks.

Tips for Disney World with Toddlers: At the Parks

18. Plan one must-do activity each day

I already talked about planning your vacation.

So, you should have an idea of what park you’re doing on which days, where you want to eat, rides you’re interested in, characters you want to meet, and the shows you want to see.

Just typing that is a lot! And with a toddler, you probably won’t accomplish it all.

So, pick one thing each day that you absolutely MUST DO!

As long as you do that one thing, you’ve been successful for the day. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

19. Take advantage of Early Theme Park Entry

Staying at a Disney resort gives you early access to the parks every day.

Staying at any of the deluxe resorts also gets you Extended Magic Hours in the evenings at select parks.

Since you get early morning access no matter where you stay, take advantage of that time with your toddler. You more than likely won’t be staying out late with your little one, so those late evening hours may not be something you’ll ever need.

Hitting the parks early allows you more time with fewer lines and the ability to head back to your hotel for an afternoon nap or a stop at the pool, before returning to the parks in the evening.

20. Familiarize yourself with Genie+

I’m not a fan of using Genie+ because I remember the free Fastpass system. And I don’t want to pay even more if it’s not necessary.

However, you should be aware of Genie+ and all it has to offer, so here’s a brief rundown.

• The My Disney Experience App gives you access to everything Disney World (wait times, character meetings, dining reservations) and it’s all free.

• Disney Genie is there to help schedule your day. It gives you tips for how to enjoy your day at the park you are currently in (also free).

• Genie+ is a per-person add-on feature that helps your family skip the lines (known as Lightning Lanes). The price varies depending on when you visit. You can book a Lightning Lane for a popular ride. Two hours later (or once you’ve checked into that ride), you can book your next Lightning Lane. (It’s great if the lines are too much for your little one to handle.)

• Individual Lightning Lanes are for the most popular rides and are not included in Genie+. You can book one of these as early as 7 a.m. on the morning of your park day. They are a separate fee, and you don’t need to purchase Genie+ to buy an Individual Lightning Lane. (I did purchase this for my husband to ride Rise of the Resistance, and it was super easy to navigate.)

• Virtual queues are also available on some of the popular rides. These are free, but you need to be on the app at 7 a.m. to snag a pass. I loved the virtual queue because you don’t have to wait in a ridiculous line for hours waiting to ride. (We used this for Guardians of the Galaxy, along with Rider Switch (Tip #21), so we were both able to ride this thrill ride while my son hit up the gift shops.)

This system is a lot to grasp until you actually use it, so get in the app and watch some videos of how it all works to understand it better.

21. Use Rider Switch

I just talked about Rider Switch, so let me explain it a little better.

For certain rides, you can check in with a cast member before you get in line and set up a Rider Switch.

This allows all the people who want to ride to get in line, while someone stays behind with those not wanting to ride.

After the first group has ridden, the second person goes through the lightning lane for their turn to ride. The second person can also take an extra person with them to ride, so if you have older kids, they could experience the ride twice.

As I said, we used it with Guardians of the Galaxy, and it was amazing! But you must check in with a cast member before the first party rides, or the system isn’t aware of what you are planning.

22. Get the memory maker

To truly capture all these wonderful memories with your toddler at Disney World, add the memory maker to your vacation package.

What is the memory maker?

For one fee, you can download all the photos that Disney PhotoPass Photographers take while on your vacation. That means you actually get to be in the photos with your family!

To fully take advantage of this service, stop every time you see a PhotoPass Photographer. They are found in the most iconic locations (park entrances, park icons, character meet and greets).

They also offer magic shots, so let them know you have the memory maker and want the magic shots. They can add special characters to your photos.

Ride photos are also included with your memory maker. And there is also a special studio in Disney Springs for extra magic shots.

We got over 400 pictures from our week-long trip, and we didn’t even hit every spot.

If you’re not interested in adding the memory maker, you can ask the photographer to take a picture with your phone.

23. Get or create an autograph book

If you plan on meeting characters, consider purchasing an autograph book for the characters to sign.

Each character has their own unique signature, and it’s fun to watch your child interact with their favorite Disney characters.

You can wait to buy an autograph book while on vacation, purchase one ahead of time, or even make your own.

I have one of these from when I was younger, so I didn’t think we needed another book that my son might not even look at.

And then a week before we left for our trip, I found some much better ideas than a simple book. One is having characters sign wooden Christmas ornaments, and the other is having them sign art canvas (which is what we did).

I loved this idea; since we can hang them in his room, and he can enjoy the signatures.

I got three circles to make a Mickey head (not knowing how many signatures would fit). We filled two, so I can write the year or paint a castle on the third.

24. Take advantage of toddler firsts

There are some super fun things you can take advantage of during your toddler’s first trip.

One is getting their first haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop at Magic Kingdom. While anyone can get a haircut here no matter their age, a first haircut package comes with a special ear hat, a keepsake lock of hair, and a milestone certificate.

Another is selecting your own ear hat and having it personalized at Box Office Gifts at Town Square Theater. You can get up to two lines of text in your favorite color and font. These make for such cute photos in front of the castle.

The final thing your little one can experience is a trip to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom. This is where your child can choose their favorite princess (or knight) costume and have a special makeover. Be aware that this is only for children ages 3 through 12.

25. Utilize the Baby Care Centers

There is a baby care center located in each of the parks.

Whether you need a private space to breastfeed, change a diaper, or just take a moment to rest, you can visit a baby care center. They have toddler-size toilets, if you’re little one is afraid of the big ones. They even have a small store with baby products for sale.

There is also a first aid station nearby equipped with nurses who can treat you and paramedics on site to assist with major medical emergencies.

26. Take or rent a stroller

I already talked about how a stroller is best for the airport, so maybe you’re already taking your own stroller. If you are, I suggest getting (or making) a stroller tag, with your family name, so you can pick it out of a crowd. You’ll be shocked at how many rows deep those strollers are around the carousel!

Also, get some stroller hooks, so you have extra room to haul your backpack, snack bag, and shopping bags. You can even click your water bottles on for easier access.

If you’re not taking your own, you can absolutely rent one from Disney. They have both daily and weekly rates. There are some downsides to the Disney strollers:

• They don’t recline, so napping could prove difficult.
• They don’t offer much shade.
• You can’t keep them for the week. When you enter a park, you get a stroller and then return it before you leave. If you’re park hopping, you must do this at each park. And you’ll have to carry your very tired kiddo to your car or bus for the ride to your hotel.

You can also choose to rent one from an off-site company. There are a few different companies, but the one I was leaning toward was Kingdom Strollers. I had read other reviews and thought they had the best price. They offer more traditional strollers and will deliver to your hotel (and now the airport). They also have cribs and electric scooters for rent.

27. Take safety precautions

While it may not be something you want to think about, and I hope it doesn’t happen, you should be prepared if your child should get separated from you.

Take safety precautions before you leave home.

• Consider a child safety harness, backpack, or wrist links to keep your child nearby.
• Use a stroller with an attached snack tray, so your child can’t sneak away (most likely when you’re in a gift shop).
• Get some waterproof ID bracelets, with your child’s name, your name, and phone number.
• Attach an AirTag to your child’s shoe, so you can track them with your iPhone.

Once you’re at the parks, show your child a cast member’s name tag and tell them to look for someone with that tag, should they get separated from you.

Also, take a photo of your child in the morning before you start your day. This way you know exactly what they are wearing, if you need help looking for them.

28. Stick to your home schedule

I know you want to fit as much fun into your vacation as possible but try to stick to your home routine as best you can.

Plan meals around the same time each day.

And if you’re still doing naps at home, try to fit one in during the day. Whether you go back to your hotel, or your kiddo gets a stroller nap, downtime is super important.

You can try to keep bedtime the same, but you’re on vacation and it’s mostly going to depend on how you spend the rest of your day.

29. Take a backpack

This is probably a no-brainer since you’ve been lugging a diaper bag around for a while now, but a backpack is a lot easier to carry than some diaper bags. Make sure it is comfortable to wear.

You’ll need to bring diapers; if you’re not potty-trained. And a change of clothes, if you are potty-trained and in case of rain.

Ponchos are a must. Water and snacks. Autograph books. There’s so much to carry when you’re traveling with a toddler.

30. Bring snacks but enjoy some park food

If you have a picky eater, you definitely want to pack some of their favorite snacks. Some of the foods they prepare in the restaurants that would be toddler-friendly (mac and cheese) do not taste the same as what they eat at home, so you need to be prepared.

If you don’t have a picky eater, please tell me your secrets! You still might want to pack some snacks, if you get stuck in a long line and you haven’t eaten lunch yet.

With any type of eater, be sure to check out the park foods. Your toddler may find something they didn’t even know they liked. And a cold Mickey-shaped ice cream sandwich on a hot day is good no matter what age you are!

31. Be safe in the sun

Even in winter, the sun can be intense in Florida. Be prepared by using sunscreen each morning and reapplying as necessary.

Get a reusable water bottle for your little one to keep them hydrated. You can get free ice water at most restaurants. Or fill it with bottled water, so they have a straw. (Disney only has paper straws, and tiny teeth can destroy those pretty quickly.)

Use a hat to keep the sun out of their face and the stroller shade to keep the sun out and temps low. Also, pack a stroller fan to keep the air moving.

If you need to, find an indoor ride or restaurant for some a/c.

32. Bring a distraction for long lines

Waiting in line can be brutal for a toddler. (I know because it’s brutal for me.)

Bring along some things your little one can do to distract them from the wait and all the people.

Coloring books, stickers, small toys, or your phone are all things that can make the time go by faster.

Some of the rides at Magic Kingdom even have in-line entertainment for kids. Dumbo has an entire indoor play area where you can wait until your party is called. There are also play activities in the lines for Winnie the Pooh and Seven Dwarf Mine Train.

33. Visit the child play areas

When visiting Walt Disney World with a toddler, sometimes you have to do the things they like to do. And for my son, that is the playground.

Most resorts have playgrounds, and three of the four parks have child play areas.

• I already mentioned the one in line for Dumbo. (You can access this even if you’re not waiting to ride.) It’s a great place for everyone to cool off. Near Dumbo, you can also find the Splash Station inspired by Dumbo’s Circus. There are bathrooms nearby to change into swimsuits.

• Magic Kingdom also has Tom Sawyer’s Island with a fort and caves to explore. This is located on an island, only accessible by a river raft. It’s outdoors, and there are no longer any concessions available, so bring your own water.

• At Animal Kingdom, you’ll find The Boneyard where your kiddo can enjoy bridges, caves, and slides. There’s also a dino dig site where they can uncover fossils. And a shaded area for parents to sit.

• Epcot has both indoor and outdoor play areas. One is an indoor playground located at the exit of the Seas with Nemo & Friends. Another indoor play area is at the exit of Mission Space. There is also an outdoor playground with benches for parents near Test Track. There are also several splash pads located in Future World.

• While Hollywood Studios doesn’t have any play areas for kids, they do have Disney Junior Play and Dance! It’s a fun-filled dance party with favorite Disney Junior characters and music from the shows, where kids can dance out their energy.

34. Use noise-reducing headphones

If your little one has a noise aversion, take a pair of noise-reducing headphones for watching fireworks.

Some rides and even the crowds can be especially loud at times. You may even find them helpful on the plane, depending on where you sit.

My son isn’t a fan of the vacuum, so we already have a set of these, and they definitely came in handy during those fireworks.

35. Don’t try to do it all

While this may be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for your family, don’t try to do it all. There’s no way you can do everything that Walt Disney World has to offer in just one trip. Even with all the times I’ve been there, I still haven’t done it all. (And it’s always changing.)

Stick with the rides and characters your kid likes. Pivot from your original plan if your toddler is not into dark rides, can’t sit still through the shows, or isn’t a fan of the fireworks.

And always consider their mood. With the heat, long days, and constant stimulation, meltdowns are bound to occur. Let them lead the way.

When in doubt, find food, water, or a/c, and take a break.

Is it worth taking a 2-year-old to Disney World?

It is absolutely worth taking your two-year-old to Disney World! Disney is made with kids in mind, so there will be plenty for your two-year-old to do in the parks and at the resorts.

And best of all your two-year-old is FREE! So, take the trip and make the memories.

How many days should a 2-year-old spend at Disney World?

This really depends on your child. Do they enjoy amusement parks? Are they good in large crowds?

If you plan on visiting each of the four parks, then you should plan at least one day at each park. Maybe two at Magic Kingdom because it is so large.

But you should also plan on rest days, as well. They are so beneficial to the whole family and make your vacation even better.

Review the rides and attractions at each park before going so you know what you want to see, and maybe you can park hop Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Or Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom.

Is Disney World good for 3-year-olds?

My son was three when we visited Disney World for the first time, and I would absolutely recommend taking a three-year-old to Disney World.

Three-year-olds are more interactive and have a little bit more of their own personality, so you really get to see them enjoy themselves more than younger kids.

They’re also a little bigger, so they can enjoy more rides.

After we came home, my son seemed a little more mature from the whole trip. And he’s asking when we can go back.

Which park is best for toddlers at Disney World?

You know your child best and what they enjoy.

But when looking at rides you can do with a toddler, Magic Kingdom Park is going to be the best park at Disney World for a toddler. They offer the most rides with no height requirement, and the favorite ride of all toddlers: it’s a small world!

While Disneyland did come first and it is the only park that Walt got to see completed, I still think Disney World is the clear winner.

The reason why Disney World is the best between the two parks is simply the size.

Disneyland Resort has two parks (Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure) and being that it is located in the middle of Southern California that is all it has room for. There is no way for it to grow. If they put in new attractions, they first have to take out a ride everyone loves.

They reimagine rides at Disney World as well, but they do have space to add more lands, more rides, more shows, and still keep the things people enjoy.

The constant changes are what keep people coming back year after year. There’s always something new to see at Disney World.

What is Disney World best known for?

Disney World is best known for two things.

The first thing is Cinderella’s castle. Every Disney park has its own princess castle and Cinderella’s is the iconic castle overlooking Main Street in Magic Kingdom Park and the symbol of the Walt Disney Company.

The second thing it is known for is being the largest Disney park in the world. The Walt Disney World Resort covers over 25,000 acres of family fun. That’s over 40 square miles (roughly the size of San Franciso!).

Why do people love Disney World so much?

1. It’s huge

Like I said, its size is one of the two things Disney World is best known for.

But what exactly is in those 25,000 acres?

• 4 Disney Theme Parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom

• 2 Water Parks: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach

• A shopping and dining area, known as Disney Springs

• Themed resorts and hotels for all budgets

• Four professional golf courses and 2 miniature courses

That’s a whole lot of bang for your buck when you’re considering a Disney vacation.

It also means your vacation can be anything you want it to be: your children’s first time, a girls’ weekend getaway, a romantic couple’s retreat. Each of those trips is a completely different experience, and you can make each of them happen at Walt Disney World!

2. Immersive

Being that Disney World is so large means that it is a completely immersive experience.

First, let’s talk about just Magic Kingdom. The park is divided into six different lands; each with its own theme, feel, and music. Once you enter that land, you can no longer see or hear anything going on in other parts of the park.

Even Disney cast members (a special name for Disney employees) working in that area are dressed accordingly and may even have their own accents or mannerisms that go along with the theme.

Simply entering Magic Kingdom is like stepping away from the real world. There is no parking lot visible from the front gates. You either take Disney transportation from your hotel. Or you park at the Ticket and Transportation Center and are shuttled to the font gates by ferry boat or monorail.

Beyond that, if you stay on Disney property, each hotel is uniquely themed and you enter a special place that is well-kept and gives you the same Disney feel, without being surrounded by non-Disney hotels or stores.

Even entering the Main Gates of Disney World property means you are no longer traveling with everybody on the highway. You are now surrounded by all Disney-goers.

This is not something you can get traveling to local amusements parks or even Disneyland itself, being that it is right in downtown Anaheim.

Whether it’s giant Disney characters and scenes decorating the outside of the resort, the pool with its special slides or fountains, or the beautiful lobby that greets you at check-in, the feeling you have when you enter your Disney resort is a combination of relaxation and elation. You finally made it, and the magic can now begin!

Between the grounds being perfectly manicured, the hotel rooms being clean and comfortable, and the cast members always having a smile on their face, there is no other hotel that can compare to a Disney resort.

6. Food

Disney World has some of the most amazing food and dining experiences.

Quick service restaurants can be found throughout the parks, but don’t think that is all there is to eat!

Make reservations at a table service restaurant to enjoy some good food, good service, and even some good entertainment.

Some restaurants offer character dining, which means the characters come to you, while you sit and enjoy your meal. Most of the restaurants are themed in some way, so you can expect the cast members to fully immerse you in the dining experience.

7. Shopping and dining

Of course, you can shop and eat in any of the parks and resorts. (Each resort has its own restaurant and gift shop.)

But I am talking about Disney Springs! Walt Disney World’s very own outdoor food, entertainment and shopping district. (You may also hear people refer to this area as Downtown Disney, as that was its name more recently.)

It’s a great place to go on the day you arrive, if you’re not heading straight to the parks. Get some food, take a walk, and get a little shopping in. There are also many free things to enjoy while at Disney Springs, including live entertainment.

Another wonderful area to check out for food and entertainment is Disney’s Boardwalk. Located near EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, it gives the feel of Coney Island. There are games to play during the day and street performers in the evening.

You can even stay in the excitement by booking a room at the Boardwalk Inn, which is only a boat ride away from EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.

8. Disney characters

Disney characters have to be one of the biggest reasons why Disney World is the best!

You can find all your favorite characters throughout the parks, and sometimes even at your Disney resort.

Between character meet and greets, stage shows, parades, and character dining, Disney characters are all around.

Be sure to check each park for which characters are available. Find Disney princesses, Pooh and friends, and Mickey Mouse and friends at Magic Kingdom. Find princesses and others around Epcot. Mickey and Minnie, Olaf, Sully and characters from Toy Story, Disney Jr, and Star Wars can be found at Hollywood Studios. Mickey and Minnie can also be found at Animal Kingdom.

From the mouse keepers who decorate your room while you’re out for the day. To the custodial staff drawing Disney characters on the pavement first thing in the morning. To the cashiers addressing you by name. It’s truly the cast members who make the magic.

10. Transportation

The Walt Disney World Resort is huge (see reason #1 why Disney World is the best).

But one of the best things about Disney World is that you don’t have to navigate it. Once you are on Disney property, let Disney do the driving.

Use any of Disney’s free transportation to make your way around Disney property. Not only is it free, but some of the transportation is only something you can do at Disney:

• Monorail – The monorail takes you from the parking lot to the front gates of the Magic Kingdom. It also circles the Seven Seas Lagoon, so use it if you’re staying at any of the monorail resorts. You can also take the monorail from Magic Kingdom to EPCOT. And if you have no other reason to ride it, check it out anyway. It’s free and something you can’t do anywhere else!

• Skyliner – The Skyliner is the newest form of Disney transportation and connects four Disney resorts to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. You can use it to park hop between EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, even if you’re not staying at one of those hotels.

• Boats – There are boats available throughout Disney to make your transportation needs a little more enjoyable. There’s a ferry from the front gates of Magic Kingdom to the parking lot. The Friendship boats are available to take you from EPCOT and Hollywood Studios to the Boardwalk Inn. The Sassagoula River Cruise is a free boat ride that takes guests from Disney Port Orleans Resorts to Disney Springs. There are even special fireworks cruises you can book in advance for a romantic moment.

• Buses – Buses are available throughout Disney property to shuttle you from your hotel to the parks and even Disney Springs. It might not be the most unique way to travel, but it’s free and you don’t have to worry about driving (especially after spending all day in the parks).

11. Fireworks

Disney does not disappoint when it comes to fireworks! And it will ruin you for your local neighborhood fireworks display for years to come.

Between the stunning displays and being synched up to music and video, you can expect large crowds. It’s a good idea to stake out your spot early and find the perfect place to enjoy the evening. For an extra cost, you can even book a fireworks dining package at each of the parks.

You can enjoy nighttime fireworks displays at Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot every night. During peak times, on some nights there are even two shows, so no one misses out.

12. Special events and festivals

There are so many wonderful things to do on your Disney trip. But there are events and festivals held throughout the year to make sure you have the best time whenever you book your vacation.

• After Hours Events are held on select nights in the different Disney parks for an extra cost. You enter after the park closes to experience everything with less crowds.

• Run Disney Events are held at different times throughout the year. You can choose to run a 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon or all four races over the course of a four-day weekend. You get a decorative race bib, a medal, and a chance to meet characters along the way. They even have special merchandise to commemorate your run. Check out their virtual races to receive special medals throughout the summer.

• Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party starts in September and runs on select nights through October at Magic Kingdom. There’s a special parade, stage show, dance parties, and character meet and greets. It’s one of the best ways to meet Disney characters that aren’t usually found in the parks, dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes. Kids can also dress up and trick-or-treat throughout the park.

• Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party starts in November and runs on select nights through December at Magic Kingdom. There’s a special parade and fireworks, stage shows, dance parties, and character meet and greets. Find characters you don’t normally see, dressed up in their Christmas best.

• Holidays at Walt Disney World Resort happen each year beginning November 1 and ending shortly after the new year. Each theme park has its own tree themed to the park. Magic Kingdom has the most decorations of all the parks (as that is where the Disney World parade is televised). Each resort has its own tree, and there is a life-size gingerbread house located at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort that is not to be missed.

• EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays celebrates holidays from around the world. Enjoy the Candlelight Processional, narrated by various celebrities during the season. Try seasonal foods at the holiday kitchens and enjoy cookie trays located throughout the different countries of World Showcase.

• EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival is the springtime celebration of flowers, food and music held in EPCOT from March through June. Topiaries of your favorite Disney characters can be found throughout the World Showcase.

• EPCOT International Festival of the Arts is held in January and February each year and is full of activities for the whole family. Although I’ve given you many reasons why Disney World is the best, you may not want to spend your entire vacation on Disney property. (It’s okay, I won’t tell anyone.)

There are plenty of other amusement parks and attractions located in and around Orlando that you might enjoy as well.

And if you’ve taken your own car, rented a car, or even grab an Uber, you can easily get to these wonderful attractions.

• Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure is about 15 minutes from Walt Disney World and features the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

• SeaWorld is also about a 15-minute drive and features rides, shows and the characters from Sesame Street.

• Busch Gardens is almost an hour and 20 minutes away and features rides, shows, animal encounters and the characters of Sesame Street.

• Kennedy Space Center is about an hour to an hour and a half drive and features space museums and artifacts, a tour, a chance to meet an astronaut, a simulated launch, and maybe the opportunity to see the real thing.

• Gatorland is about 20 minutes away and features alligators, crocodiles, and many other animals, several ziplines, special tours and even a night shine where you see how gators feed after dark,

• Beaches within an hour and a half drive include Daytona Beach, Cocoa Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and the Canaveral National Seashore (located 35 minutes from Kennedy Space Center).

With so many things to do nearby, you can really make the most of your Disney World vacation.

15. It’s home

The final reason why Disney World is the best? The nostalgia.

Upon entering your Disney resort, someone will greet you by welcoming you home. Many people who have been going to Disney for years say they are heading home.

1. Sign up for a Disney Visa card

This simple trick saves me hundreds of dollars when I visit Walt Disney World.

Sign up for a Disney Visa Rewards Card and use it on all your purchases leading up to your trip. I use mine to pay for my Disney trip, so I even earn points on the trip itself.

You then request your points be turned into a Disney Rewards redemption card and use it just like you would a gift card. I’ve paid for a whole vacation’s worth of food by using these points. You can also use it on merchandise. And the credit cards come with special perks around the parks, like discounts and character meet and greets.

Disney pro tip: Don’t get rid of the redemption card if you’ve spent all the credit card points, as you can request new points to be added to that same card.

2. Purchase Disney gift cards

As I said, I use the Disney reward points to pay for my in-park purchases, but a lot of people save money by buying Disney cards to pay for their trip and make their purchases.

This works especially well if you haven’t had enough time to accumulate reward points or if you’re not approved for the Visa card.

Buying gift cards from Sam’s Club or Target is going to get you about a 5% discount. So, if you spend $500 on Disney gift cards, you’ll be saving $25. If you’re not a member of Sam’s or Target, you can buy your gift cards at Giant Eagle to earn extra fuel perks.

You can use these gift cards to pay for food or merchandise in the parks. But you can also use them to pay off your balance on your entire trip.

You can also combine multiple Disney gift cards into just one card, up to $1,000. Just don’t forget to take them with you when you travel.

3. Start a side hustle

One way to afford Disney World is to find a way to make some money on the side.

Whether that means picking up extra hours at your current job, looking for something you can do part-time, or starting a side hustle.

It’s also the perfect time to go through old clothes or toys to see if you can sell anything for extra cash.

4. Plan early and start saving

It’s easy to get sticker shock when you see that $5,000 vacation bill, but knowing what you must do while you’re there, having a rough idea of what things cost and having a plan in place on how you’re going to make it work is going to put you ahead of the game.

One of the greatest things about booking your Disney vacation is that you don’t have to pay for it all at once.

You must put down a $200 deposit when you book your vacation and then you can make payments in the months leading up to your trip, with the final payment due 30 days prior to your arrival.

So, if you’re someone who has a hard time saving money, make a monthly payment to cover the cost of your trip. Or use the gift card trick above so that the money is already saved and accounted for.

6. Use a travel agent for free

I never knew this, but you can book your Disney trip with a travel agent for free.

They can book everything from your hotel to your park tickets to your dining reservations. Some can even book your flight and rental car.

7. Purchase souvenirs outside of the park

While it’s always fun to make your Disney purchases at Disney World, the better option is to buy Disney merchandise before you get there.

Obviously, there are certain items you can only purchase on Disney property. But some things can be found off property at a much more reasonable price:

• Ponchos – Always buy ponchos before you go! Not only will you save money, but you’ll also save time in the parks because you won’t be waiting in line with everyone else who didn’t think ahead.

• Attire – Whether it’s t-shirts, princess dresses, or Halloween costumes, these items always cost a lot of money in the parks when you could be saving that money for something else.

• Balloons – There are giant Mickey balloons as you pass through the gates of each Disney park (except Animal Kingdom). Bypass that cost (of $15) and bring your own balloon. This is also a great option to decorate your stroller to find it later in the park. Disney pro tip: Get a free balloon at the front desk your Disney resort. Be aware that you cannot take balloons into Animal Kingdom or Animal Kingdom Lodge. Find out what other free things you can do on your Disney trip.

• Bubble wands – Just ahead of the 3 o’clock parade in Magic Kingdom, the bubble wand sellers make their way down Main Street. Buy one before you go, so your little ones don’t miss out on the fun and you’re not shelling out even more money.

• Anything that lights up – Just like the midday parade, more carts selling light-up toys and ears make their way down Main Street just before the fireworks begin. Packing some glowsticks is a great way to avoid the last purchase of the day.

8. Compare cost of flights to driving

This is going to be personal to your situation, but you’ll want to compare the price of a flight for your family versus driving your own car (or a rental car).

While you’ll have to consider the cost of gas into driving, also take into consideration the wear and tear a trip of that length will put on your vehicle. If you have a larger family and it’s not feasible to fly, consider renting a car instead.

If you are flying, don’t just compare prices between airlines. Also, check out what day it is cheaper to fly out on (usually a weekday). And see what day it is cheaper to actually purchase your tickets (usually the beginning of the week is cheaper than the weekend).

9. Use Disney transportation

Once you are on Disney property, you will be able to take advantage of free transportation throughout the Walt Disney World Resort (hotels, parks and Disney Springs).

If you are staying on Disney property and brought a vehicle, you can once again park at all hotels and Disney Springs for free, as well as the theme parks.

However, if you flew into Orlando International Airport, you’re going to have to figure out how to get to your resort. Disney used to have a shuttle called the Magical Express that picked up your luggage and took it and you to your resort for free. (And I write this in hopes that one day they will bring it back!)

For now, you’re going to have to find your own way there (and include it in your vacation budget). Here are your options (lowest to highest):

• Uber or Lyft – cheapest option but not good for a large group
• Mears Connect drive by Sunshine – bus company that ran Magical Express, now just with a cost, makes multiple stops
• Rental Cars – higher end option but have your own vehicle on property
• Private Vehicle – most expensive option

10. Stay offsite or at a value resort

One of my favorite things to do when I go on a Disney vacation is to stay at a Disney hotel. In the Disney bubble, as some people say. All Disney World resorts and hotel rooms are themed in some way, and you start your day in the most magical place.

However, if you’re on a tight budget it may be cheaper to stay at an off-site hotel. Some hotels in the area actually have free shuttles that will take you to parks and also offer a free breakfast.

If you do want to stay in the Disney magic and still have a cheap vacation, try the Disney value resorts. Any of the All-Star Resorts, Pop Century or Art of Animation are going to offer you the best value. These resorts are great for young kids, as they offer larger than life decorations and theming that your child is sure to love.

11. Stay at the campgrounds

If you’re looking for the best way to save a lot of money on hotel rates, check out the campgrounds at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. All you need is a pop-up camper or RV to enjoy the lowest rates at any of the resort hotels.

How to Afford Disney World: Cheaper Ways to Play

12. Go in the “off” season

While there is no actual “off” season anymore, there are times during the year when the cost of a trip to Disney is going to be less than others.

Obviously, summer is going to be the most expensive and most busy time of year. Also, any major holidays, three-day weekends, and spring break are going to be peak times and cost more.

The best times to go are going to be early May or September because no one wants to take kids out of school at the end or beginning of the school year. There are less people in the parks, and you can usually get a good deal on your vacation package.

13. Go before your child turns 3 (or 10)

The best way to save money on your Walt Disney World vacation is to go before your child turns 3. A child under the age of 3 gets free entry to all the Disney parks and is not required to pay for meals (although you should include them in your dining reservation).

After 3, you will pay the kids rate for park entry. Until the age of 10.

So, if you’re worried that your not-yet-three-year-old may not remember their first time at Disney World, go before your child turns 10 and they have to pay full price for park passes.

14. Plan for non-park days

Ok, so you’ve decided it’s a good time to go to Disney World and you’ve looked up the best deals, and now I’m telling you to spend less time in the parks. What?!

This is actually practical for two reasons:

1. You’re going to save money. Ticket prices are expensive, especially the more people in your group. This is one of the easiest ways to afford your Disney World trip.
2. You’re going to need a break. Disney is a lot of walking and a lot of stimulation for younger kids. Rest your feet, hit the hotel pool, and take a mental break during your trip to spend some time relaxing and enjoying your vacation. And check out some of the free things to do on Disney property.

15. Add more park days for cheaper rates

Although this may go against the previous tip, park tickets actually get cheaper the more days you purchase. So, if this is a first-time trip or a trip for the whole family, you may want to consider adding more park days to your vacation package.

Also, if you were planning to do some other theme parks in the Orlando area, it may be cheaper to skip those and add the extra days at Disney. Check your options for the most affordable plan.

For a trip with young kids, I would stick with less park days and more down-time at the resort so you’re not dealing with toddler tantrums or meltdowns (theirs or yours).

16. Don’t buy park hopper passes

But first what is park hopping?

Park hopping is when you enter one park in the morning, do the attractions and shows at the top of your list, then heading to another park later in the day.

It sounds like fun and that it would help you get the most out of your time at Disney World.

But for the price and amount of time it takes you to travel between parks, it might just not be worth it.

If you’ve never been to Disney before, you’ll want to take it all in and you may find you have no need to park hop and you end up not even using the feature.

This is where planning your trip early comes in handy. Find out what your family wants to do in each park and which parks they will enjoy most. And plan your time accordingly.

17. Skip the add-ons

Along with park hopping, there are other add-ons you can avoid that will increase the cost of your Disney trip.

• Water Parks – There are two water parks located at Disney World (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon) that you can add on to Disney World vacation packages. But that’s an upcharge and the hotel pool is free!

• Genie+ – Genie+ is a new add-on service that allows you to “skip” the line on certain attractions. You must still wait in a line, but it is shorter, and you can get more done during your vacation. You don’t need it if you go during the “off” season and head to the parks when they open. You can’t purchase Genie+ until you are on-site.

• Individual Lightning Lanes – Lightning Lanes are one step up from Genie+. It’s the same concept but it’s for the high-demand rides, costs more and is charged on a per ride basis. You also can’t purchase this until you are on-site.

• Memory Maker – The memory maker is the ultimate photo package, where you pay one price and get all the photos from your trip. Cast members are situated throughout the parks to take your picture in iconic locations (like Cinderella’s castle) and during character meet and greets. Ride photos are also included. You can ask cast members to take a photo with your phone (for free). You can also purchase individual photos, if you see one you just can’t live without. If you do purchase the memory maker, do it before your trip, since it is cheaper.

• Special Events – Special events happen throughout the year. There either special ticket events or festivals. Special ticket events are things like Mickey’s Halloween Party or Mickey’s Christmas Party. You pay an additional amount to enter these events. Different festivals are held at Epcot and are included in your ticket price. They are lots of fun, but you may end up spending more on food and festivities that aren’t included with your ticket.

18. Do a grocery run or set up a delivery

If you are renting a car at the airport or driving yourself, plan to stop at a grocery store before entering Walt Disney World Resort.

Get snacks, breakfast foods, and extra baby supplies where they are cheaper. You can also find cheaper Disney merchandise at retail stores located in the Orlando area.

If you can’t get to a grocery store, set up a grocery delivery to come to your resort hotel. Garden Grocer is the best-known grocery delivery service for Walt Disney World, and since they deliver to bell services, you don’t need to be present to pick up your order. You could also use Amazon Prime or Wal-Mart to deliver your order. Although you must be present if you order alcohol.

Another alternative would be to ship a box of non-perishables to your resort before you leave home. Address the label to your name, c/o Your Resort Hotel’s front desk, your arrival date, and the address. Use a flat-rate box from the post office, so you are not charged by weight.

19. Bring snacks/lunch to the parks

Since you’re getting a grocery order, bring snacks, water and even lunch into the parks.

You can have breakfast in your room rather than ordering at the resort. This is especially important if you have young kids that only eat a small number of things. (I see you, toddler parents!)

Bringing your own food can save you hundreds of dollars over the course of your trip.

20. Bring a reusable water bottle

Rather than paying for bottled water each day you’re baking in the Florida sun, plan to bring reusable water bottles for each of person in your group.

Also, be aware that you can ask for a free cup of ice water at any Quick Service restaurant (or Table Service restaurant, with a reservation). Please stay hydrated while you enjoy your family vacation.

21. Go at a later date

This might not be the most popular way to save money on a Disney vacation. But you could simply postpone it (or not go at all).

If you’ve talked to a travel agent and priced out your Disney vacation and still feel it’s out of your price range, the best thing to do is wait until you can make it work.

The worst thing you can do is spend all your money on a trip to the most magical place on Earth and be stressed the entire time because you don’t know how you’re going to afford groceries next month.

If you still want to make a Disney trip happen, remember that prices go up every year, so the sooner you can save and go, the cheaper your trip will be.

I’ve been to Disney World nearly a dozen times over the course of my life.

So, it’s no surprise that I am planning a trip for my toddler.

But thinking of the cost of a trip to Disney (roughly $5,000-$8,000 for a week of exhausting fun), got me wondering if there are any free things to do in Disney World.

And the answer is surprisingly. YES!

Even things that I didn’t really consider when I was visiting Disney as a childless adult became things that I think my son would really enjoy and won’t cause extra strain on the wallet.

There are even free things to do in Disney World that adults will enjoy as well!

Is Disney World still free on your birthday?

You might find it hard to believe but in 2009, Disney offered free admission to the parks on your birthday. What a way to celebrate!

Unfortunately, that promotion ended in December of 2009. And while many hope it returns, it hasn’t happened since.

But there are other things you can do for free at Disney World. And a few things that are actually pretty cheap, which is great if your traveling with your group of kiddos. Check out some of my favorites below!

What can you get for free at Disney World?

There are a number of free things to do in Disney World, some of which you can get before you even step foot on property. While it’s likely you’ll be spending a big chunk of money to make this vacation happen, the best way to get anything (free perks or good customer service) is to be polite to the cast members who are doing their best to make your stay magical.

Free Things to Do in Disney World: Before You Go

There are not many free things you can get from Disney before your trip begins, but the ones that make this list are the best things you can get for starting your trip off on the right foot.

1. Disney Vacation Planning DVDs

When you are still in the planning stages of your Disney trip, get a free planning to DVD to get inspiration and preview all that Disney has to offer.

Save it as a surprise for your kiddos when you announce that you’re taking them to the most magical place on Earth.

2. My Disney Experience App

Before you step foot in a park or even check into your Walt Disney World resort hotel, you’re going to want to download the free My Disney Experience App.

This app gives you access to everything Walt Disney World.

You’ll be able to track your hotel and park reservations and make payments for your vacation.

You will be able to book your dining reservations 60 days in advance, so you’re sure not to miss your favorite meals.

You can also add things like Genie+ and Lightning Lane purchases once you are on property.

It’s a must-have to get the most out of your Walt Disney World vacation.

Free Things to Do in Disney World: At the Resorts

There are so many great options for free things to do in Disney World before you ever even enter any of the Disney parks. And the best part is if something free is happening at a hotel that you’re not staying in, you can still visit and enjoy the free activities.

3. Free Balloons at Your Hotel

I didn’t even know about this freebie until I started researching this trip for my toddler.

And I think it’s absolutely amazing!

Just go to the front desk of your Disney resort and ask for a free balloon. The only resort this is not offered in is the Animal Kingdom Lodge. They do not have balloons anywhere on Animal Kingdom property for the animals’ safety.

I can’t tell you what type of balloon you will get because I haven’t done this yet, but it’s a great way to dress up your hotel room from the moment enter. (You can bet I’ll be asking for one when I check in, so I’ll update you when I find out.)

Also, the last I checked balloons in the parks were $15. And you have to deflate them before taking them on the plane. Or gift them to an incoming family when you leave. Free balloons are the way to go!

4. Celebration Buttons

Celebration buttons are one of my favorite free things to do in Walt Disney World.

You can get them at of the Disney hotels, any of the theme parks, and even Disney Springs.

They have birthday buttons, first visit buttons, happily ever after button, and I’m celebrating buttons.

Cast members throughout Walt Disney World are taught to look for these buttons when guests wear them and acknowledge the celebration. So, expect a lot of happy birthdays or congratulations.

Birthday buttons could get you a free cake or ice cream at some restaurants (though it’s not a guarantee).

And the best part is that the cast member will write on your button. It might be your name, a special date, number of ears (get it?) you’re celebrating, or what you’re celebrating.

And when they wrote on our buttons at our hotel, the cast member put a piece of tape over the writing, so it didn’t fade. (Just a reminder to take some tape with you, if you want to do the same.)

5. Disney Stickers

This is one of those things that I never really thought of as a freebie before, since I never went to Disney with kids.

But when we checked into our Disney hotel, there was always someone greeting hotel guests and passing out Mickey Mouse stickers. Now, that I have a toddler, free stickers – yes please!

And apparently you can get free stickers throughout the parks as well. If you happen to strike up a conversation with a cast member, ask if they have any stickers. Remember, it’s always best to be polite. Bad behavior is never rewarded with stickers.

6. Wake-Up Call

A great way to start your very early day at Disney World is with a wake-up call from a special Disney character.

Rather than setting a traditional alarm for your kiddos, let them answer the phone each morning for this fun surprise.

Characters include Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto. You can choose your favorite character and get one from a different character every day.

7. Resort Pools

The pools at your resort are always free for the length of your stay. And while resort hopping is okay, pool hopping is not. Many of the pools are locked and can only be accessed by guests of that resort.

During the day, there are also games and free activities that take place at the pool for those looking to get away from the crowded parks during the midday heat.

8. Resort Movies Under the Stars

Another great free thing to do in Disney World is check out the free movie that is playing at your resort.

Known as Movies Under the Stars, each resort offers a large patch of grass and a projector screen playing a favorite Disney movie. Bring a blanket to sit on and some snacks and spend your evening unwinding with your family. Check your resort information for a times guide.

9. Scavenger Hunts

Check with the front desk of your Disney resort hotel to see if they have a scavenger hunt you can participate in.

If not, create your own scavenger hunt for your kiddos before you leave. Find some fun facts about each of the parks or your resort and offer clues throughout the day.

A simple scavenger hunt for Epcot is meeting someone from each of the countries in the World Showcase. Or trying to take a picture with all of the characters available for meet and greets. Or even using the different forms of transportation available on Disney property. The possibilities are endless.

10. Resort Hopping

Resort hopping is a fun thing to do at Disney World, if you’ve scheduled a rest day. You don’t need a hotel reservation to visit the other Disney resorts. However, if you’re driving yourself, you may need a dining reservation.

To get around that, choose Disney transportation instead. (Also free! Check out those options below.)

Be aware that you can’t take transportation between resorts, but you can go to a central point (like a park or Disney Springs) and then to another resort.

• Christmas – Christmas at Disney is epic! Decorations go up November 1 and stay up until just after the New Year. Every park has its own tree, and every resort has a tree and its own Christmas theme. Disney’s Grand Floridian boasts a life-size gingerbread house that is not to be missed!

• Animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – You don’t have to be a resort guest to see some of the animals roaming the Animal Kingdom Lodge. There are special viewing areas throughout the resort that anyone can visit. Pick up a free Wildlife Field Guide at the front desk to spot all the animals.

• Welcome Leis at Polynesian Resort – Another freebie that you can enjoy without being a resort guest is a flower lei. Get your lei at the entrance or ask for one at the check-in desk.

• Campfire Sing-a-longs at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort – Fort Wilderness Resort offers a campfire sing-a-long with Chip and Dale. Bring your own marshmallows to roast or purchase a s’mores kit to enjoy around the fire as you hang out with Chip and Dale.

• Butterfly Gardens at Contemporary Resort and Fort Wilderness Resort – Wander the beautiful butterfly gardens at either of these resorts for free.

• Drawing Classes at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort – Drawing classes are offered daily at the Art of Animation Resort for kids and adults. You don’t have to be a resort guest, but you should call ahead to book your time.

• Tri-Circle D Ranch Horse Stables at Fort Wilderness Campground – Check out the horses of Disney at the Tri-Circle D Ranch Horse Stables. Pony rides, trail rides and carriage rides are available for a fee, but it’s free to visit the horses and walk around the grounds.

• Resort Tours at Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge – These free tours are available to anyone wanting to join. The tour of Animal Kingdom Lodge discusses how African culture and cuisine inspired the design of the resort. While the tour of Wilderness Lodge, a ranger discusses the resorts American art collection and architectural inspiration.

Free Things to Do in Disney World: At Disney Springs and Transportation

Disney World is so much more than parks and hotels. So, while you’re there be sure to take advantage of everything Disney Springs has to offer. And let Disney handle the driving by using any of the forms of transportation Disney offers for free.

11. Disney Springs

Disney Springs is the outdoor shopping, food and entertainment district of Disney World. It’s gone through some changes through the years, mostly recently known as Downtown Disney and previously Pleasure Island.

It’s now more family-friendly and a great place to spend a free day, an evening after the parks close, or your check-in day. Walk around enjoying the atmosphere, grab something to eat, and check out these free things to do at Disney Springs.

• Outdoor Play Areas – The perfect thing for small kids are the outdoor play areas. There are two sets of splash pads with restrooms nearby. So, make sure to bring a change of clothes for your little one.

• Street Performers – One of my favorite things about Disney Springs is the unscheduled events that take place while you’re just walking around. We’ve come across a variety of very talented musicians while waiting for a table reservation or doing some light shopping.

• Concerts at The Waterside Stage – There are a variety of free concerts and live entertainment that takes place at The Waterside Stage. School bands and choirs perform here, among others.

• Building Legos at The Lego Imagination Center – The Lego store offers the widest selection of Legos for sale. And the best part is the free outdoor play area where you can build your own Lego creations.

• Ghiradelli chocolate squares at the Ghiradelli Chocolate Shop – While shopping in Disney Springs, stop at the Ghiradelli Chocolate Shop for a free chocolate square.

• Dino Dig at T-Rex Cafe – Just outside of the T-Rex Cafe is a closed-in area where kids can enjoy a fossil dig site.

12. Free Parking at Disney Springs and Hotels

While you’re at Disney Springs, you can enjoy free self-parking. Of course, you can always get to Disney Springs by taking free Disney transportation.

As of January 2023, parking is also free at all Disney resort hotels. And if you’re staying at a Disney resort, you get free parking at all of the Disney theme parks and water parks. Or you can use one of the free transportation options below.

13. Transportation

I’ve mentioned this many times, but yes, there are ways to get around Walt Disney World without using your own car. And the ones below are all free! And some of them are just a super fun way to travel, so even if you have no reason to use them, I recommend trying them just for fun.

• Monorail – If you take your own vehicle to the Magic Kingdom, you will park at the Ticket and Transportation Center, where you will take the monorail or a ferry boat to the park entrance. At least once during your Disney vacation, I suggest taking a ride on the monorail. You can visit each of the monorail resorts that surround the Seven Seas Lagoon: Contemporary Resort, Grand Floridian and Polynesian Resort. You can also take a separate monorail from Magic Kingdom to Epcot.

• Skyliner – Another fun way to get around Walt Disney World is the newer Disney Skyliner. The Skyliner connects four Disney resorts (Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach Resort and Riveria Resort) to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot.

• Boats – Boats are available throughout Walt Disney World for free and are a unique way to travel. There is a ferry boat available at Magic Kingdom to take you to your car. The Friendship boats are available to take you from Epcot and Hollywood Studios to Disney’s Boardwalk Inn. The Sassagoula River Cruise is a free boat ride that takes guests from Disney’s Port Orleans Resorts (Riverside and French Quarter) to Disney Springs. Let me recommend if you’re taking a boat in the cooler months, bring a jacket, as it gets cold on the water after dark.

• Buses – The final free option for transportation on Disney property is Disney buses. You can get to any park, water park, Disney Springs, and hotel by bus. You can travel park to park on some buses, but you can’t travel between resorts by bus. There are signs throughout Disney property for each bus location. Just be aware that your resort bus may not drop you off in the same spot where you’ll be picked up. Always double-check the bus number for your resort when leaving each park at night.

Free Things to Do in Disney World: At the Parks

These free things to do in Disney World require a park ticket, but it’s great that there are so many fun things to do in the parks that don’t have an extra cost.

14. Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours

As a Disney resort guest, you get early entry access to all of the theme parks a half an hour before the park opens on any given day. Check the opening times of each of the park before heading out for the day. And if you want to take advantage of this free perk, plan on getting to the park ahead of that half an hour timeframe, as you will be waiting with a sea of other people.

Extended evening hours are also available for guests staying at any of the deluxe resorts. These extra hours are only available on certain days. But they begin at the closing time of the park and typically last two hours. It’s a great way to squeeze in a bit more fun on your Disney vacation.

15. Park Maps

As a first-time visitor to Walt Disney World, you’ll want to grab a park map at each of the theme parks when you enter. They are available in many different languages.

While the maps can also be found in your My Disney Experience App, they make for a wonderful free souvenir, especially if you enjoy scrapbooking. You’ll also have a map of the parks on the day you visited, as the parks are ever changing.

I know frequent visitors of Disney World who like to keep maps of each of their trips to see how they have changed. They are even separate maps for the special events that go on throughout the year (Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, to name a few).

16. Cup of Ice Water

Be sure to stay hydrated on while on your Disney vacation by asking for a free cup of ice water at any Quick Service restaurant (or Table Service restaurant, with a reservation). The last thing you want while enjoying your trip is to pass out from heat exhaustion.

17. Character Meet and Greets

Character meet and greets happen throughout all four Disney parks, and you don’t need to pay any additional fees to enjoy them.

Keep your eyes open if you’re staying at a Disney resort because Disney characters have been known to show up there as well. And you wouldn’t even need a park ticket to see them.

There are also special character dining meet and greets that will cost you the price of a meal and you’ll need a dining reservation. So, take in the free character meet and greets where you can!

18. Pixie Dust at Sir Mickey’s in Magic Kingdom

If you’re looking for some actual pixie dust while visiting Disney World, head over to Sir Mickey’s in Magic Kingdom.

It’s a souvenir shop located behind Cinderella’s castle in Fantasyland.

Just ask any of the cast members and they will sprinkle pixie dust on your head for free with their magic wands. Be aware though, pixie dust, in this case, is glitter. (And we all know how long it takes to get glitter out of things.)

Before you leave Fantasyland, head over to the Sword in the Stone in front of King Arthur Carousel and take your turn at trying to remove the sword. It’s a magical feeling if you’re one of the lucky ones who can actually pull it out. (It doesn’t work for just anyone.)

19. A Pirate’s Adventure in Magic Kingdom

A Pirate’s Adventure is in an interactive treasure hunt where you search for clues throughout Adventure Land.

Get your first clue, grab a map, and you’re off!

This is a perfect thing to do at Disney if your little one is a fan of pirates.

There are five different quests, so if you have a really good time, you can go back for another round.

20. Kidcot Stations in Epcot

Kidcot Stations are fun craft stations located in all 11 countries around World Showcase.

Your kiddo can draw, color, and collect stamps from each country while they learn some facts about the country and talk to cast members.

21. Club Cool in Epcot

To cool off and try some different soft drinks from around the world, head to Club Cool in Epcot.

It’s a giant room full of soda fountains, where you get a disposable cup to try different flavors of Coca Cola. Each flavor offers a description and the country it is from.

Beverly has been known to surprise a lot of folks with its bitter flavor. So, let your loved ones try it first and enjoy the look on their faces, since you know the secret.

22. Wilderness Explorers in Animal Kingdom

Become a Wilderness Explorer (like Russel from Up) at Animal Kingdom.

Complete nature-themed activities throughout the park and earn 25 badges along the way.

It’s geared for kids ages 3-8, but anyone can join in on the fun and experience Animal Kingdom in a whole new way. Go to a Wilderness Explorer station to get your booklet and get started.

23. Live Entertainment

While it is included in the price of your park tickets, you should also be aware of the free entertainment that happens in the parks daily.

Some of this entertainment is listed in your times guide. Any of the stage shows are going to be listed with their times throughout the day, and they are not to be missed. No one puts on a show like Disney.

But some of the best live entertainment only happens when you stumble upon it. Street performers and stage shows throughout the World Showcase in Epcot, live music by The Dapper Dans performing on Main Street in Magic Kingdom, the Green Army Drum Corps in Hollywood Studios and the Tam Tam Drummers in Animal Kingdom.

And one of my favorite things that can only be found in the early morning hours before the Florida sun bakes it away is the custodians using water and their brooms to create Disney characters on the sidewalks around the parks. Everyone is so creative at Disney!

24. Hidden Mickeys

Mickeys have been hidden throughout the parks and the resorts by Disney Imagineers.

It’s not a plush toy or even a picture, but it’s a Mickey shape built into the design of the architecture.

Hidden Mickeys are fun to spot on your own, but if you need a little help, this guide supplies you with hints on finding Hidden Mickeys all over Disney property.

25. Taking Photos

Obviously, it’s free to take pictures wherever you go on vacation.

But a Disney vacation offers beautiful backdrops for your family photos. Whether it’s Cinderella’s castle, the area outside the Tangled bathrooms in Magic Kingdom or the beautifully designed walls around the World Showcase in Epcot, you won’t have a hard time finding the perfect photo opportunity.

You can choose to purchase the Memory Maker during your stay or simply ask a cast member if they wouldn’t mind taking a photo with your phone (for free).

26. First Aid and Baby Care Centers

This might not be a big deal until you need it. But know that there are first aid stations at each Disney park that are equipped with nurses who are able to treat you. They have bandages, over-the-counter medications and moleskin for your blistered feet.

They also have private rooms should you need to lie down and paramedics on site to assist with major medical issues.

Each park also has a baby care center, which is free to use during the day. Whether you need a private place to breastfeed, change a diaper, or just a moment to rest with your little one, you can visit the baby care center.

They also have a small store stocked with baby products for sale: formula, food, diapers, wipes, sunscreen, medicines and clothing.

Free Things to Do in Disney World: At Night

Nighttime is the best part of a Disney World vacation. Everything is lit up and becomes even more magical (if that’s even possible). So, here’s some of the best free things to do in Disney World after the sun goes down.

27. Electrical Water Pageant

This is one of those things that I always stumble upon at the end of the day that never ceases to amaze.

The Seven Seas Lagoon outside of Magic Kingdom becomes a magical floating parade of lights after hours. You can see the electrical water pageant from any of the three monorail hotels and while waiting for your bus when leaving the park.

It is scheduled to run after the fireworks at Magic Kingdom, giving you just enough time to see it pass the entrance of the park. And it’s a nice surprise at the end of a very tiring day.

28. Fireworks

Think you have to have park entry to enjoy the nightly fireworks? Nope this is one of the most amazing free things to do in Disney World!

Take the monorail to the Polynesian Resort for a great view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks. You can enjoy the specular show while dipping your toes in their sandy beaches.

A great place to enjoy the fireworks at Epcot for free is at Disney’s Boardwalk Resort. Go early to walk around, take in the atmosphere and check out the nightlife.

29. Pressed Pennies

This is one of the cheapest souvenirs at Disney World, so it needs to be included in this list of free things to do in Disney.

And like everything else, there’s an app for that. Just go to the My Disney Experience App and search for coin press to get a map of all the coin machines located throughout Disney World.

Pennies are only a dollar or even less in you buy them in groups. And now you can pay with a dollar bill or your credit card.

And you don’t even need to carry your own pennies. The machines come pre-filled with pennies, so you’re not weighed down with a pocket full of change.

30. Pin Trading

Another low-cost thing to do at Disney World is pin trading.

You can pick up a pin trading starter set at your Disney hotel gift shop, which usually includes a lanyard and four pins.

Then you can trade pins with cast members throughout the parks, resorts and Disney Springs. From then on, it’s a free activity for your little one or even you.

Cast members usually carry their pins on lanyards or a small piece of felt. Simply ask to see their pins, and if you don’t see any you like, you don’t have to trade. It’s a great way to get to know the cast members on your next vacation!

The first time I traveled with my toddler was a weeklong trip to visit family over Thanksgiving. I have never hauled around so much stuff in all my life.

I wrote myself a travel with toddler checklist to make sure I didn’t forget anything. And I decided why should I keep this information to myself? You can get my actual travel with toddler checklist for free below, so you don’t even have to worry about writing down all the essentials.

When I traveled, I had the luxury of taking my car and not going terribly far, so some things on my checklist may not be feasible if you are flying with your toddler. However, everything on the checklist is something you should consider. If you can’t take, find a way to rent it or find something that will work in your situation.

Once you have an organized suitcase, all you have to worry about is making memories with your little one. Happy travels!

Travel with Toddler Checklist Essentials

Basic Items

1. Travel Information

If you are traveling internationally, your child will need passport (and this holder will keep it safe). You should also have their birth certificate (or a copy). Double check with the airline before leaving.

And if it will just be you and your toddler, be sure to add a parent’s consent letter (from the other parent) to your travel with toddler checklist. (It may not be required or ever seen, but it’s better to have it, if you should need it.)

2. Diaper bag

When creating your travel with toddler checklist, your diaper bag should be at the top of the list. Use this diaper bag checklist to be sure you have everything you need in there. And use any additional space to pack whatever else will fit.

3. Child’s suitcase

I used a child-size suitcase for my toddler when we traveled. Between the suitcase and his diaper bag, I was able to fit everything he needed except some of his toys. And to be honest, that was probably my own fault, as we weren’t traveling far and had the luxury of space, so we weren’t worried about packing light.

4. Diapers and wipes

If you have a toddler who is yet to be potty-trained, make sure you add diapers (or pull-ups) and wipes to your travel with toddler checklist. I think I packed 5 diapers for each day of our trip (and maybe an additional 5, to be on the safe side).

Pay attention to how many diapers your child is wearing a day in the weeks prior to your trip to determine the best number for you. And 3 to 4 packs of wipes should get you through. Although that may seem like a lot, they come in handy for cleanups of all kinds (as you’re well aware).

Parenting tip: If you are flying and checking a car seat, store the extra diapers and wipes in the car seat to save room in your luggage.

5. Diaper cream

Even if your child has never had diaper rash a day in his life, you do not want to miss adding this to your travel with toddler checklist. Long car rides, busy schedules, and heat can all play a part in needing to use some diaper cream, so you don’t want to be stuck without it. And get a travel applicator to keep the cream (and other unspeakables) off your hands.

6. Changing pad

A changing pad is an essential item for a long car trip. And I would suggest taking two. We have a simple one that came with our diaper bag. It’s just a flat, wipeable pad that is perfect for changes in the car or hotel. But I would get another that is fully loaded, so you don’t need to haul your stuffed-to-the-brim diaper bag into restrooms.

7. Clothes

Ah! This is always the hardest thing to pack for me. But it can be so easy when you’re packing such small clothes. First, let’s figure out what you need to pack and then we’ll discuss the best ways to pack it.

• Outfits. At least one outfit for each day of your trip (don’t forget travel days as well). Two additional “just in case” outfits.
• Socks and undies (if you’re potty-trained). A pair for each day. And two extra pair.
• Shoes. Two pair, as they get lost easily or may get wet. Also, any special shoes – sandals or boots, depending on your location.
• Coat or sweatshirt. In case it rains or gets chilly.
• Hat. For those sunny days.

Now that you’ve got it all laid out, what do you do with it?

• Large Ziploc bags. Put each day’s outfit in a bag, and you can label the bag with the day, so you don’t even have to think about what you kid will wear each day you’re away. Put the extras in their own bag and label them “just in case.” And keep those bags until the end of your trip cause you never know when you may need a bag along the way.
• Packing cubes. These keep your suitcase in order, so things don’t shift and get misplaced. Use one for your clothes, nighttime items, meal items, hygienic items, toys, and safety items so you know right where everything is. They’re also great when you’re packing up to come back home because you can easily see where things go and what’s missing. And they’re perfect if you’re packing your toddler’s items in your own suitcase instead of a separate one.

This also works when you are traveling with more than one kid and want to cut down on the number of suitcases you’re hauling but don’t want the clothes to be a mess. Simply, label the bags with each child’s name and no added stress for you!

Nighttime Essentials

8. Bedding

This is always a top priority on my travel with toddler checklist when we go anywhere. Because my kiddo only likes to sleep in his room, in his bed, as dark as can be and his sound machine running. The first time we did a week away from home we actually bought a second crib and took his mattress and sheets, so it felt as much like home as possible.

I’m not saying you need to go to that extreme when traveling with your toddler. But definitely keep your child’s preference in mind. And maybe practice sleeping other places ahead of time.

So, what do you need for toddler bedding essentials? And how do you get it to your destination?

• Full size crib, portable crib, or pack and play. You can purchase and travel with either of these items (if you’re driving) or connect with a baby rental company in the area ahead of time to rent those items.
• Mattress. If you’re using a crib, make sure a mattress is provided or you have the correct size mattress (as portable cribs fit smaller mattresses).
• Sheets. For a crib or pack and play, pack sheets as they may not be provided from a rental company (be sure to check the size).
• Bed rail. If you’re little one is sleeping in a bed, this will give you some peace of mind while you’re away and may be available at your hotel or from a rental company.
• Nap mat. If all else fails and you don’t want to run the risk of your little one falling out of bed, these are great for travel.

9. Blanket and pillow

Depending on the weather and your child’s preference, take along an appropriate blanket and pillow, if your child is using one. These can be great soothing items when in the car or new places.

10. Pajamas

Two sets of pajamas should be enough when traveling with your toddler. On the off chance they have an accident, you have a spare set. And you can launder the other set, if needed.

If you don’t have access to a washer/dryer or laundromat, you can hand wash your items in a sink using these Tide packs (don’t forget to add them to your travel with toddler checklist).

11. Bedtime toys or books

You know what bedtime toys your kiddo can’t sleep without, so be sure to add them to your travel with toddler checklist. And if reading a book is part of your bedtime routine, don’t forget to pack a favorite nighttime book.

12. Sound machine

Like I said, my little guy uses his sound machine for naps and an hour at bedtime, so you don’t want to forget to pack yours. If you don’t already use a sound machine, this might be the time to try a portable one.

Between long car rides, new sleeping areas, and unfamiliar noises, your little one might need that constant hum to drown out the rest of the world. (Don’t forget to replace the batteries before you leave.)

13. Monitor

Unless you will be sharing a hotel room and have eyes on your kiddo, you’ll want to pack your monitor. I use this one because it’s easy to set up and it’s a hack free system. (Don’t forget to pack the charge cord.)

Mealtime Essentials

14. Highchair or booster seat

This one applies more if you’ve rented a home or are staying with family. I don’t recommend hauling your highchair, if you don’t have the room. You may be able to rent a highchair for the home for the length of your stay or try a portable one.

And at restaurants, you can certainly ask for special seating. And if nothing else, throw down a blanket and have picnics on the floor. Whatever you’re planning, be sure to add it to you travel with toddler checklist, so you don’t forget to pack it.

15. Dinnerware

You certainly want to include toddler plates, bowls, cups and utensils to your travel with toddler checklist especially if you’re staying in a place where you will be cooking your own meals. However, bowls with lids are great for eating on the go. And sippy cups are great in the car or even at restaurants.

16. Food

Again, if you’re traveling somewhere that you can cook your own meals, don’t forget to pack your kiddo’s favorite foods. Whether it’s toddler meals or pouches for tots, you’ll want to bring something you know think your child may eat.

17. Snacks

Snacks are great for on the road, while waiting at a restaurant or to keep your little one occupied while you are checking in. Use a snack catcher for little hands or a bento box to carry a variety of snacks.

18. Bibs

Be sure to pack enough bibs to keep those outfits clean. The less laundry you have to do (and stains you have to treat), the better.

19. Disposable placemats

These placemats are perfect to put down when at a restaurant and you don’t want your little one eating off the table. (Sometimes they are questionable.)

Hygiene Essentials

20. Shampoo and body wash

You know which shampoo and body wash works best for your kiddo. So go ahead a pack your favorites, just in case they are not available where you are staying.

And if you’re strapped for space, skip those large bottles and squeeze some in these. (They’re just the right size for air travel.)

21. Towels and washcloths

If you are traveling to a rental home or by RV, you’ll want to include toddler towels and washcloths on your travel with toddler checklist. However, if you are staying in a hotel, you can leave this item at home. (Unless your kiddo has a favorite item.)

22. Rinser

Any special items you use to bath your kiddo should be included. A shampoo rinser or splash guard may be an essential item for your child. We still use the squeeze bottle that came with our baby tub (it works perfectly, and I can’t find another one like it).

23. Bath toys

One or two bath toys should be added to your travel with toddler checklist. This is an especially important item if your kiddo isn’t a fan of bath time. Anything that can make your trip feel more like home is likely to ease some fears.

24. Hairbrush

Vacation is the time to be carefree, but you may have a night you want to look your best, so don’t forget to pack your little one’s hairbrush. Otherwise, just let their hair do its thing!

25. Toothbrush and toothpaste

Be sure to pack a toddler toothbrush and toothpaste (no matter how much your little one fights you). It’s important to keep those teeth cleaned.

26. Nail care

Toddler nails can grow pretty quick, so be sure to pack nail clippers (or these scissors) so you don’t have to worry about your little one scratching his face (or yours). Add a nail file to your travel with toddler packing list so you can keep their nails trimmed and neat while you’re away. I also use a nail brush at bath time to clean under my son’s nails.

27. Potty seat

If you have a potty-training toddler, be sure to pack a potty seat that fits over the adult toilet seats. If you’re traveling by car, you could just go ahead and pack their potty chair for easy access anywhere.

Parenting tip: Place a diaper in the bottom of the potty chair for easy cleanup. Just roll up the diaper and go. (Be sure to pack some odor eliminating bags to keep those diapers until you can dispose of them.)

28. Toilet seat covers

These covers are perfect for your potty-trained toddler. They completely cover public toilet seats, so you don’t have to worry about what their legs or hands are touching.

Playtime Essentials

29. Favorite toys or animals

Can’t go anywhere without those favorite toys or plush animals? Make sure you add them to your travel with toddler checklist. And keep an eye on them while you’re away (they love to go on their own adventures once they leave the house).

30. Books

If you have a toddler who loves to read, pack a few of their favorite books. These make good distractions on long car rides.

31. Coloring items

A coloring book and these washable crayons are a great item for travel (whether your flight is delayed or on a rainy day). I also love these Water Wow! books. They’re perfect for in the car: no mess and no lost crayons.

32. Flash cards

Anything that keeps your toddler busy while traveling is a necessity. And these flash cards are a perfect way to keep your toddler engaged and learning while on the go.

33. Tablet

You know your kiddo best, so if a tablet with some kid-friendly apps or their favorite shows is what will keep them entertained best, pack it! Travel days are the hardest for kids with short attention spans (and even adults). Do what you need to do to make your vacation enjoyable.

Safety Items

34. Baby Proofing Items

You’re going to know what works best in your house: outlet plugs, cabinet locks, drawer locks, toilet locks. If you know where you’ll be staying and can plan for this ahead of time, it will add peace of mind.

35. Baby gates or play space

Other items you may be able to rent while you are away are baby gates or a play space. However, if you will be staying with family or friends that may not be an option. So, add it to your travel with toddler checklist, even if that means to inquire about it when booking your trip.

36. Thermometer

Add a thermometer to your travel with toddler checklist in case of illness while you’re away.

37. Medicines

And to combat that illness, I recommend taking some baby Tylenol on your trip (at a minimum). It seems that sickness follows travelers, so you’ll want to be prepared. And you never know when a tooth could be trying to make its way through.

You’ll also want to include any medication specific to your child. Check your bottles for expiration dates and that your refills are full.

38. Sunscreen

Wherever you may be taking your vacation, you’ll want to pack some sunscreen for any time you’ll be spending outside.

Miscellaneous Items

39. Pacifier or teethers

If your little one is still using a pacifier or if they’re teething, be sure to add these very important items to your travel with toddler checklist.

40. Window covers

This is if you have a toddler who does not take naps unless they are in a completely dark room. You may not be lucky enough to have black out curtains or blinds available in the room where your little one will be sleeping. So, be sure he gets to sleep easy with this window film.

41. Stroller

Whether you have a massive stroller or a simple umbrella stroller, you’ll want to pack something for when your little one no longer wants to walk and you’re too tired to carry them (and all their stuff).

42. Car seat

While you’re busy loading your car, don’t forget to leave room for that car seat. And if you plan on flying, it’s a good idea to take your own car seat along with you. You might not always be able to get a rental car or a taxi/rideshare with a car seat.

43. Laundry detergent or Tide packs

If you have access to laundry facilities while you’re away, be sure to pack some of your own laundry detergent, so you’re little one doesn’t develop a rash from a different product.

And if you don’t have access to laundry, use these Tide packs to do laundry in a sink or tub and air dry your clothes. (These are a great item when traveling with a toddler, who may need an extra set of clothes.)

44. Clothes bag for dirty laundry

I always throw a mesh laundry bag in my toddler’s suitcase so I can corral all the dirty clothes. This makes it so much easier if you’re headed to a laundry facility or to just keep the clothes separated until you can wash them at home.

45. Empty bags

I always add empty bags to my travel with toddler checklist (mostly because I will definitely forget them otherwise).

So, what bags should you take?

• Wet/dry bags. For wet items you want to keep separate from other items (I’m thinking swimsuit, rain-soaked clothes, soiled clothes).
• Odor eliminating bags. Mostly for diaper or potty-training toddlers but even great if you just have something stinky that you need rid of.
• Large Ziploc bags. For any miscellaneous items. They’re even good for going on water rides at a theme park to keep your items dry.
• Light drawstring bag. To carry anything while you’re out on your adventures: a jacket, drinks, things your little one wants to bring but doesn’t want to carry himself.

46. Beach towel, swimsuit, diapers, hat, beach toys

This one is kind of beach specific, but if you have a little one that loves the water, you’ll want to be prepared for that hotel pool. While you may be able to rent a beach towel or toys, be prepared by adding a swimsuit and swim diapers to your travel with toddler checklist. (That way you know they fit before you leave home, and you’re not wasting vacation time searching for something.)

47. Anything essential for your child

I think I gave you a pretty exhaustive list of items to add to your travel with toddler checklist. However, each kid is different and if there is something you know your child can’t live without, be sure to add it to your own list.

And as a word of advice, keep a close eye on any favorite stuffed animals, blankets, pacifiers, or toys you take with you. When those things go on vacation, they sometimes have a way of not coming back. And I would hate for your whole trip to be ruined because Mr. Squishy is lost somewhere in Ohio.

As I said before you may have any number of reasons for making a vacation budget template. It may be one of the ones I mentioned above: budget-friendly, keeping an eye on cost, or pricing a trip before booking, or it may be something unique to your situation. Either way, once you’ve created a vacation budget template, it will be something you can use year after year to plan every trip.

1. You want a budget-friendly vacation. For whatever reason, you need to save money, but you also need to relax! It makes it hard to relax when money is an issue.
2. You want to keep an eye on your spending. Maybe you’re not on a tight budget, but you always come back from vacation feeling like you’ve overspent. Use a vacation budget template to keep your daily spending on track with your comfort level.
3. You want to know how much your trip will cost before you book. Maybe you’re not restricted by funds, but you still want to know how much you’re going to be spending. Use your vacation budget template to track all your research before your book anything.
4. You want to compare prices. This really ties into #3. If you make a vacation budget template, you can easily compare different travel destinations or different options within the same area. It’s the best way to be smart about your spending when it comes to travel.

Before you can determine how much anything will cost, you must choose your destination. This is the fun part. Maybe you already have a place in mind, or maybe you’re using your vacation budget template to compare prices. In that case, you get to pick more than one location. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson that said, “Life is about the journey, not the destination.” So while, you do need to pick a location, part of gearing up for your trip is the planning phase. Once you have your location picked out, you need to choose your dates. Maybe you have school-age kids, so you only have summers available. There is no one right answer to this question. A one-week trip in your home state is going to be less expensive than a week-long cruise or a trip to Maui. After you’ve chosen your location and potential dates, now is the time to calculate your expenses.

Vacation Budget Template Expense: Transportation

When calculating your transportation expenses, you’ll want to include your flights, personal car expenses, car rental, gas, and public transportation. Flights can range between $300-$500, but you’ll also need to include baggage fees and airport parking. If air travel is out of your price range or you’re just not up to flying, you’ll either need to take your own car or rent a car. I know some people opt to rent a car, so they don’t put so many extra miles on their own vehicle. Either way, you’ll need to include the cost of gas.

If you have chosen to fly, you’ll need to consider your transportation needs once you get to your location. You may need to rent a car, which you’ll need to include the cost of gas again. Or you’ll be taking public transportation: a bus, a taxi or an Uber. If you’re staying at a hotel, check the hotel website to see if they offer a free shuttle to and from the airport, especially if you’re traveling with a large group.

Vacation Budget Template Expense: Lodging

Unless you’re planning an RV trip, you’re going to need a place to stay. You’ll either be in a hotel, a rental property, a bed and breakfast, or maybe you’re staying with family or friends. Each of these options comes with its own pros and cons. A breakfast is usually included at most hotels, so that would save you money on your first meal of the day every morning. With a rental property, you are able to cook all your meals in the convenience of your own kitchen, saving about 1/3 of the cost of food, but that means you’re cooking and cleaning on vacation.

A bed and breakfast offers breakfast, obviously, many people to mingle with, and owners that are knowledgeable about the area. If you plan on staying with family or friends, I recommend not being too much of a leech. While they probably won’t expect to be compensated for your stay, it’s a nice gesture to buy groceries or cook a meal in return of their generosity. And you can ensure you have a place to stay again, if you should need it.

You may also have an additional hotel stay. If you decided to fly, you might need to book a hotel room at the airport for an early morning flight. Or if you’re driving, you may choose to split the trip and stay overnight half way. Just don’t forget to add in the extra hotel cost.

Vacation Budget Template Expense: Meals and Snacks

Yes, I discussed food when I was having you choose your lodging, and here I go again. I can’t help it, I like to eat! But with all that travel, you’re bound to work up an appetite.

Let’s start with your travel days. If you’re flying and the airline doesn’t offer meals, I recommend grabbing something at the airport before you leave or getting something to eat for on the plane. Yes, airport food is more expensive. They have a captive audience. But I’ve been on flights that have been delayed and ones where we circled the airport for hours. You do not want to take the chance that you’ll be able to eat when you get to your destination. You’re also able to pack snacks in your carry-on, which is great if you’re traveling with kids. If you’re traveling by car, you can pack a cooler with all your favorites or stop at a restaurant.

Once you’re at your destination, you need to budget for each of your meals. Breakfast is usually included in most hotels. And I’m not saying you shouldn’t stay somewhere that doesn’t include breakfast because those places usually offer more food and a better variety. Just be aware that you need to include that amount in your budget. If you’re renting a property and can make your own meals, you’ll probably spend around $10 per meal per person, while eating out can cost around $30 per meal per person.

A way to get around worrying about the cost of your meals is by staying at an all inclusive resort or even considering a cruise. Your meals will all be covered in the price of your stay. However, you’ll need to include the cost of alcohol, soda, and in-room dining, as these are usually all extras charges.

Vacation Budget Template Expense: Activities and Souvenirs

Unless you’ve booked a beach vacation and plan on doing nothing but soaking up the sun and sand, you’re going to want to get out and explore. I could sit here and list out all the activities you could plan for your trip, but that is a different topic for a different day. Instead I’m going to suggest you make a list of all the must-dos for each member of your family and research each of them. If you can’t fit them all in due to time or budget, narrow it down to the ones you all agree on or each person’s top pick.

Also consider that whatever activities you do, you may want a souvenir to remember it, so budget for that as well. I would suggest at least $25 per person per day, depending on your location.

Vacation Budget Template Expense: Pre-Trip Purchases

This is the budget item no one really thinks about, but I’ve got you covered! If you’re driving (especially long distances), you should have your car looked over. If you need an inspection or oil change, get it done before you leave. Check your tires and the spare. Make sure everything is in working order, so you don’t end up stranded. It’s also a good idea to carry a car emergency kit, some basic car tools, and a first aid kit.

The most obvious pre-trip purchase is going to be your wardrobe. Maybe you need new shorts, tops, or swimwear. If you don’t wish to include all the costs of new clothes, you absolutely need to include the cost of items that are trip specific and you may not use often.

Include the cost of your toiletries and medications. This too is a reminder to pack these items. You’re not likely to forget your toothpaste, but you might not think about packing Imodium, Dramamine or even a poncho; things that might not be easy to find while on vacation or might be more expensive, depending on your location.

Step 5 to Create a Vacation Budget Template: Start Saving

You’ve calculated the cost of your trip. The only thing left is to start saving! If you’re trip is more than a year a way, divide the total from your vacation budget template, and divide by 50. That’s how much you need to save every week for the next year. (I’m taking out two weeks for your vacation time.) You can adjust this based on when you get paid (weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly). If you’re planning your trip in less than a year, you’ll need to adjust your calculations accordingly.

If once you’ve calculated your budget, and you can’t save enough money in the allotted time, consider reworking some things: the location, the dates, the lodging or the activities you have chosen. I don’t recommend trying to do it for less by skipping meals or sleeping in your car. The point of any vacation is to relax, and you can’t do that if you’re hungry and not getting a good night’s rest. Maybe you just need more time to save for that perfect trip. It will make it that much better! And if you need some help, consider visiting a travel agent. They can save you money and are knowledgeable about most areas.

I love visiting Ohiopyle State Park throughout the year. When cresting the top of the historic Route 40 National Pike, there sits The Summit Inn; a peaceful giant among the clouds. I vowed that one day I would spend a weekend there. So I convinced my husband to visit The Summit Inn for our third anniversary.

You can’t miss the beauty of this resort as you drive by. With the grand porch overlooking the town below and the massive white pillars greeting you at the entrance, it is quite a site to behold. The lobby is just as beautiful, with the giant ornate staircase built in the early 1900’s. It is a must see for anyone traveling through the area.

What is there to do at The Summit Inn?

There are a number of things to do while you enjoy your stay at The Summit Inn. The resort offers a nine-hole golf course, with no green fees for resort guests Monday through Thursday. After your round of golf relax in one of two pools. The indoor heated pool is located on the bottom floor of The Summit Inn and offers gorgeous floor to ceiling windows, with a view overlooking the valley below. The outdoor pool and hot tub were updated to include a covered pavilion to relax, away from the sun.

Take a tour of the on-site treehouse, Black Bear Bungalow, as seen on Treehouse Masters. Then, continue your day by taking a hike on one of the many trails. Take it easy out on the front lawn of the resort, by playing a game of shuffleboard, bocce ball, or horseshoes.

Book Your Stay at The Summit Inn

If you’re looking to get out and see everything the Laurel Highlands has to offer, I suggest starting with a visit to Ohiopyle State Park. Take a trip to the newly renovated visitors’ center, which offers an amazing view of the main falls. Take a hike or a short car ride to Cucumber Falls, or take you swimsuit and visit The Natural Waterslides of Meadow Run. (Be aware that this is a natural park, not an amusement park, and there are no lifeguards.)

Take a leisurely stroll through Ohiopyle to visit the shops and grab some lunch. If you’re up for a little adventure, rent a bike to spend some time exploring the Great Allegheny Passage or hike one of the many trails. For those with an even more adventurous spirit, there’s white water rafting tours, kayaking and rock climbing.

Before heading back to The Summit Inn for dinner, make a stop at the beautiful Christian Klay Winery for a sampling of the area’s best wine (and maybe a bottle or two to go.) If you purchase a bottle, you are free to enjoy it while relaxing by the lake or under the pavilion. The winery offers tours, if you book ahead of time. They also hold many events throughout the year, so be sure to check it out before you go.

What restaurants are available at The Summit Inn Resort?

Once you’re done enjoying the beauty of the Laurel Highlands, head back to The Summit Inn for a wonderful meal, as the resort has four amazing options to enjoy good food and drinks: Mae’s Dining Room, The Veranda, The Wunder Bar, and Mount Summit Golf Club.

Mae’s Dining Room offers wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinner options. For dinner, Mae’s has the most amazing crab cakes and some of the best steak I’ve ever had. Ask your server what wine pairs best with your dinner entrée.

Breakfast, lunch or dinner can also be enjoyed on The Veranda, which is the outdoor restaurant, located on the grand porch of The Summit Inn. The Veranda offers the same great cuisine as Mae’s Dining Room, with a gorgeous view. I suggest making a reservation for dinner with a beautiful sunset view. I highly recommend taking a light jacket if you’re still enjoying dinner once the sun sets; it cools off quickly, even in the summer months.

Head to The Wunder Bar for a casual lunch or an evening drink to cap off your day. Or if you’re one for enjoying the outdoors, take a short drive to the Mount Summit Golf Club to enjoy lunch and a drink while taking in the beauty of the Laurel Highlands. (Golfing is not a requirement to enjoy a good meal here.)
