What are diaper caddy essentials for newborns?

1. Diapers

The number one thing you must have in your diaper caddy is lots of diapers! But I’m sure this is the one thing on your what to put in a diaper caddy for newborns list that you already knew.

The more important thing is that you have the right size of disposable diapers or enough cloth diapers and to restock your diaper caddy regularly.

And if your baby is not yet here and you’re preparing your diaper caddy ahead of time, remember that all newborns don’t necessarily wear newborn size diapers. Be sure to include some size 1 diapers in there, just in case your little one is a little bigger than the newborn diaper range.

Parenting tip: You can fold down the top of a size 1 diaper to make it better fit a newborn baby (if you run out of newborn diapers).

2. Baby Wipes

Wet wipes are essential to cleaning up baby’s bum after every diaper change.

People always ask how many diapers they need in the first year but rarely ask about how many wipes they’ll use. I don’t have an exact calculation for you, but I know it’s A LOT, since you’ll have a lot of diaper changes with a newborn.

Figure at least two wipes for every pee diaper. And at least four to five for messy diapers. And even more, if it’s a blowout.

Also, if you have a boy, wipes make great pee shields.

I’m still using wipes constantly as a toddler mom for so much more than diaper changes. I use them to wipe my hands, my son’s hands and face, clean restaurant tables, and at our local fair recently to wipe cow poo off my son’s leg (I guess that is their intended use though).

Long story short, you need plenty of baby wipes. Find ones that are gentle on your baby’s skin and have enough moisture to clean baby’s bum. You may need to try a few different brands to find what works best for you.

Parenting tip: I don’t use a wipe warmer, as it tends to take the moisture out of the wipes. And if your little one gets used to warm wipes at home, you’re going to have a cranky baby when you need to use colder wipes when you’re out and about.

3. Diaper Rash Cream

A good diaper rash cream will help soothe and protect baby’s sensitive skin, if a rash should occur. It’s always a good idea to keep a tube in your diaper caddy, so you know where it’s at.

You should also keep a second one in your diaper bag, so you’re not scrambling between locations to find it or forget to pack it on your next outing.

4. Diaper Cream Applicator

When your little one has those diaper blowouts, you can expect to be using diaper cream to soothe the pain. It’s nice to have an applicator on hand to keep from getting cream all over your hands, especially when you have a newborn and you’re doing a hundred things at once.

Parenting tip: If you are without your applicator, use a wipe to get the cream off your hand before washing or use a wipe to apply the cream to baby’s bum. Wipes are essential to life with a newborn.

A little off topic, but I never actually used our applicator for diaper changes. But my son found it when he was teething, and it became one of his favorite teething items, so you may get more use out of it that way.

5. Changing Pad or Liners

You should include a portable changing pad in your diaper caddy, if you plan on doing diaper changes around your home. This allows you to have a clean and comfortable space to change baby, and you can easily wipe it down if it gets messy.

If you’re using your diaper caddy near your changing table, use these liners instead. The fancy cloth changing pad covers that perfectly match your nursery are going to be a mess if you don’t use something to cover them.

These liners are the perfect size for your changing table or in your bassinet changer. Just throw them in the washing machine with your baby’s clothes and keep your nursery looking beautiful.

I actually got rid of the fancy changing pad cover and used the liners right on the changing pad, to save a lot of time cleaning up diaper blowouts.

6. Change of Clothes

Include at least one outfit change in your diaper caddy for unexpected messes or spills. Even if your diaper caddy is near your baby’s closet or dresser, you don’t want to leave your baby alone on the changing table while you’re looking for a clean change of clothes.

7. Hand Sanitizer

Ideally, you’ll want to wash your hands after each diaper change and before any nursing session. However, if you are unable to put your little one down or if they are in an unsafe location (couch or bed), it may not be feasible to get to the sink.

That makes a bottle of hand sanitizer the next best solution. Keep a pump bottle in your diaper caddy. Not only will you be prepared, but it will be easy to access when you may be otherwise occupied.

8. Disposable Bags

These plastic bags are perfect for storing dirty diapers and wipes when you can’t get to the diaper pail. Not only do they keep the mess contained but the smell, as well.

I always pack them in my diaper bag, so no one else is offended by those dirty diapers lingering in a garbage can somewhere.

9. Burp Cloths

Newborn babies spit up constantly, especially when you lift their legs for a diaper change. So, it’s super important to have some burp cloths on hand.

Actually, my go-to for the best burp cloth was these cloth diapers. I used them for everything! As a burp cloth, on the floor for tummy time, as a teething cloth for my son.

They’re huge, so you are completely covered. And since they’re actually diapers, they’re super absorbent!

10. Baby Healthcare Kit

A baby medicine (or healthcare) kit can be something you put together yourself or something you buy as a packaged item. But it should at least include the following items:

• Baby Tylenol
• Nasal aspirator
• Gas drops
• Nail clippers and file
• Thermometer

Although you probably won’t need these items during a diaper change, your diaper caddy is the best place to store them, so you know exactly where they are when you do need them.

Always check with your pediatrician on use of medications and dosage on children under 2.

Parenting tip: Trim baby’s nails while he’s asleep. I prefer these nail scissors, as you don’t have to worry about accidentally cutting your baby’s fingers.

11. Bottle of Baby Lotion

Baby lotion is a great alternative to baby powder, which is no longer recommended (source).

It can help moisturize baby’s skin after diaper changes and baths. To help prevent diaper rash, try this ointment. Since it provides a moisture barrier, it’s also perfect to use on baby’s face when he starts teething and drooling.

12. Baby Toys

Keeping your baby entertained during diaper changes makes it much easier to get the job done quickly. Even small babies will be distracted by soothers or musical toys during changes.

Small toys that are only available during diaper changes means baby will be more engaged with the toy, rather than something they have access to all the time.

Of course, as your child grows, he may become attached to just one or a few plush toys, and they will be an absolute necessity for any meltdown moments.

13. Pacifiers and Teethers

If you’re baby uses a pacifier, it is best to keep one or two in your diaper caddy, so you have one if you need it. And it’s always a great idea to keep things in one place, so you know where it’s at for next time. Mom brain is a real thing!

You also want to keep a few teething items in your diaper caddy for when those teeth start to appear (which can be as early as four months).

You’ll want to keep some water-filled ones in the fridge (never the freezer) for some cool relief. But other items that work well include clean cloth diapers, clean diaper cream applicators, these toy teethers, or these mitts.

14. Receiving Blanket or Swaddle

Receiving blankets serve a multitude of purposes, and you should keep them throughout your house and a few in your newborn diaper caddy.

No, I’m not talking about taking your baby to a rock concert. But there are a lot of festivals going on in the summer months that usually have local musicians that would be suitable for little ears.

Our area has an outdoor stage that hosts local artists in the summer and nearby restaurants provide food. Find something fun in your area to give your little one his first introduction to different sounds and rhythms.

16. Attend mommy and me music classes

An outdoor music or movement class is another great way to introduce your baby to music, which is truly beneficial for their developing brains. Music helps children regulate emotions, build relationships, and strengthen language skills (source).

However, if you are an avid bicyclist and can’t wait to get back out there, or biking is your main mode of transportation, you do have some options.

I personally have problems keeping myself balanced on a bike, so I am not the expert here. But you can learn how to bike safely with baby if this is one of your favorite things to do in summer. Please remember to check any bike laws in your state before heading out.

What’s so great about a picnic is that it can be just you and your new baby in your backyard, so you don’t have to do much planning and can run in your house if you need anything. You could also make it a backyard playdate and include dad or other family members.

For a change of scenery, grab that picnic basket and head to your local park. You can enjoy your time together while meeting other families (and set up some playdates).

25. Have a family barbeque

Enjoy a delicious meal outdoors while bonding with your baby.

Whether you choose to have the barbecue at your home or just attend one, it’s a great way to introduce your newborn to family and friends.

A personal favorite of mine when my son was a newborn was to sit on our covered porch at different times during the day watching the neighbors. I talked about the trees, the animals we heard, the cars on the street, and all our neighbors’ names and where they lived.

I wanted to write this to help you avoid many of the common baby sleep mistakes I made as a new mom. And give you the help I wish someone could have given me.

My baby was a horrible sleeper. I didn’t think he would ever sleep on his own or that I would ever sleep again.

The biggest problem I had was getting him to sleep through the night without being held.

Then getting him to sleep in his bassinet. Then napping on his own.

I’ve used the pick-up, put down method (which did not work for us). I settled on combining the Ferber method with the cry it out method, which finally got results (with minimal tears).

Just like you had to learn those early feeding cues, it’s just as important to learn your baby’s sleep cues. It will be the difference of putting down a tired baby or wrestling a cranky, overstimulated, overtired child into bed.

• Yawning
• Eye rubbing
• Slowing down
• Becoming quiet

And if you’re one to use a baby nap schedule, check for how much time your baby is awake. Wake windows change as your baby grows. Where newborns typically stay awake for only 45 minutes between naps, at 3 months of age, your baby can go about 2 hours between naps.

Baby Sleep Mistake #3: Putting Baby Down Asleep

One of the most common mistakes a lot of parents make is putting baby down after he has fallen asleep. That means you either fed him, rocked him, or in some other way comforted him to sleep and you’re making your baby dependent on you to fall asleep. These sleep crutches can be hard to overcome and the most common reason many parents try some sort of sleep training method.

This was one of the biggest mistakes I made when trying to get my son to sleep. But unfortunately, he wouldn’t sleep any other way. It really caused a lot of negative sleep associations for many of the early months of my son’s life.

And it helps baby to form better sleep habits of comforting themself on their own if you put them down while they are tired but still awake. From my own experience, I know this is easier said than done.

Baby Sleep Mistake #4: Not Letting Baby Sleep Through Cycles

We all go through a set of sleep cycles each night we sleep. And we routinely wake between cycles, without even knowing it. As adults, we have been sleeping so long that we know how to connect those cycles and get back into a deep sleep without becoming fully awake.

However, newborns are learning about everything in the world around them. And that includes how to sleep.

When they wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle, they will most likely cry out.

So, what do you do?

Resist the urge to rush to them as soon as they wake. Let them cry a bit to see if they can fall back asleep themselves. Cause once they see you, that’s it. They’re awake for sure.

Also be aware of the time you put them down for a nap. If it has only been 30 minutes and they are waking, they most likely need more sleep. It’s best to keep a log to track your baby’s sleep schedule.

Baby Sleep Mistake #5: No Bedtime Routine

Starting a bedtime routine for young children is a good idea to let your baby know what to expect when bedtime rolls around. Using a consistent routine every night gets your little one accustomed to winding down and lets him know that bedtime is coming.

Continuing to use your bedtime routine through toddlerhood is more likely to prevent meltdowns about bedtime.

You can even do a shortened sleep routine at naptime. A story and a little bit of rocking is enough to calm an overtired baby and prepare him for what’s to come.

Baby Sleep Mistake #6: Thinking a Later Bedtime Means a Later Wake Time

A commonly held myth about babies and sleep is thinking that your baby will sleep later, if you give them a late bedtime. Unfortunately, it’s just not true and will actually have the exact opposite effect.

Babies generally start to get sleepy around 6 or 7 pm, and they need 8 to 9 hours of sleep at night. Although they won’t be sleeping through the night early on.

Waiting until later in the evening to put your baby to bed will only result in an overtired baby, who will have a harder time getting to sleep. And the next day, your little one will wake at their regular time, and your baby will not have had enough sleep during the night.

This results in baby sleeping more during the daytime to make up for the lost sleep, which only causes more problems in differentiating night from day and cause more sleep deprivation for already tired parents.

Baby Sleep Mistake #7: Not Consistent with Bedtime or Naptime

Babies like routines. They rely on them to figure out what is happening during the day. It’s why a bedtime routine can be so helpful in getting your baby a good night’s sleep.

And it’s also why not being consistent with bedtimes and naptimes can be so detrimental to babies’ sleep. It may not be glamorous or exciting to spend your evenings at home, so your baby can to bed at a decent hour. But it is the best thing you can do to reduce bad habits surrounding sleep in the future and avoid this baby sleep mistake.

Baby Sleep Mistake #8: Napping Too Late

Everything I read about baby sleep during my son’s newborn stage said not to let them nap past 4 pm. And I thought that was crazy. Why would you ever wake a sleeping baby?!

But I’m here to tell you, do not let your baby nap past 4. You do not want your baby to get too much daytime sleep.

If your baby’s bedtime is between 6 and 7, he will not be ready for bed if he sleeps past 4. And since putting your baby to bed later does not mean he will sleep in the next day, you will have an overtired child the following day.

Baby Sleep Mistake #9: Skipping Naps

What’s worse than napping too late is skipping naps altogether. I’m not saying you can’t miss a nap here or there, but naptimes should be as consistent as bedtimes, especially when setting up your newborn to have good sleep habits.

Naps should take place in baby’s crib or bassinet, in a darkened room. When moving my son to nap in his crib, the only thing I found to work was getting the room as dark as could be. You may need to invest in a good pair of blackout curtains to get baby to sleep better during the day.

While napping on the go is convenient for parents, your baby will get better sleep if he is in the same place when taking naps.

Baby Sleep Mistake #10: Not Swaddling

Swaddling your baby prevents them from startling themself awake, which is a natural reflex for newborns (source). It also keeps them warm, so you don’t have to worry about having a loose blanket in their crib or bassinet.

Not knowing how to swaddle is no reason to not swaddle your baby. The nurses at the hospital are experts at this and can teach you how to do it properly.

And if you’re still having trouble, grab a set of these swaddle blankets for a proper swaddle each time. (I loved knowing that my baby was swaddled correctly and didn’t have to worry about the blanket coming loose.)

Baby Sleep Mistake #11: Not Using a White Noise Machine

Before babies are born, they are used to hearing all the sounds of your body: your heartbeat, your breathing, your tummy rumbles. So, it makes sense that they are comforted by white noise.

White noise machines recreate the noises baby hears in the womb. Babies are calmed more quickly, fall asleep faster, and stay asleep longer when using white noise (source).

A sound machine also helps to drown out other noises around your house: the vacuum, the dishwasher, the neighbor’s dog. And that leaves you time to get things done while baby is sleeping.

Newborn babies need to eat approximately every two hours. If you’re not feeding your baby enough during the day, he’s going to make up for those lost calories in the middle of the night.

And while you should still be doing middle of the night feedings, he won’t have as many night wakings if he’s well fed throughout the day.

Baby Sleep Mistake #13: Over Stimulated When Awake

Babies that are overstimulated during the day will have a harder time getting to sleep at nighttime and during naps, as it causes them to become stressed (source).

It’s best to keep the noise if your home low (TV off, music low). And as it gets closer to naptime or bedtime, lower the lights to create a calm atmosphere. It’s much easier to get baby to sleep if they are calm and comfortable.

The standard size of a pack and play is 28 inches by 40 inches. They have breathable mesh sides and are a safe space for your newborn baby to sleep.

I know sleep has never come easy in our house.

But the best thing that worked in our house was setting up a baby bedtime routine very early on. We’ve used this routine consistently for 2.5 years, and it seems to be the best thing we’ve done to keep the sleep struggles at bay.

The best way to establish a baby bedtime routine is to start early and be consistent. Babies thrive on routines (source). If they know what to expect, it’s less likely you’ll be dealing with a meltdown.

When should you start a bedtime routine with baby?

I started my baby sleep routine the night we came home from the hospital.

I was super concerned with my baby not sleeping and what I was going to do when I had to go back to work. So, I wanted to get a bedtime routine started as early as possible.

Obviously, being three days old, he had no idea what was going on.

But our days were filled with breastfeeding struggles, mom and dad not getting enough sleep, and finding time to cook meals or even get a shower.

I wanted one part of our day to be something that was within our control and we could look forward to as a family.

It was a great way to calm everyone down after a hectic day.

When should a baby’s bedtime be?

When my son was three months old, we would do our baby bedtime routine at 10 o’clock. And he would fall asleep while breastfeeding.

He’d wake up in an hour and eat again. Then be ready to go in the bassinet.

At four months, he started falling asleep around 9.

And by 5 or 6 months, he was asleep by 7:30.

We’ve kept the 7:30 bedtime up to about the 1.5-year mark, and he usually gets about 11-12 hours of sleep each night.

What is the best baby bedtime routine?

This is the baby bedtime routine I’ve been using for my son since we came home from the hospital. Consistency is key when starting a new routine. Try this routine for at least two to three weeks and then tweak it as you find necessary.

1. Give baby a bath and put on pajamas

Baths are usually great at calming kids down, especially when you use lavender bath soap. However, young babies aren’t always a fan of bath time. (I know mine wasn’t.)

And babies actually don’t need a bath every night, as it will dry out their skin (source).

So, if you want to skip the nightly bath, that’s fine. (Just make sure you are wiping their bottom clean, and bath after any diaper blowouts.)

Get baby in a clean diaper and comfy pajamas. And use a Velcro swaddle if baby is still young enough. (I swaddled until about 5 months, then switched to a sleep sack to keep him warm.)

2. Give a final bottle (or breastfeed) then brush teeth

Small babies will usually fall asleep while eating.

Once your baby is a little older, he will be able to stay awake to finish his bedtime routine.

And once that first little tooth pokes its way through, it is recommended to brush those teeth before bedtime.

This can be quite a chore with little ones (especially if their gums are sore). So, try this teething brush to get them used to the idea and get the job done.

3. Read books

I usually read three books each night before bedtime. They’re toddler board books, so they’re not very long.

And I always save this one as the final book of the night. (And now I have it memorized, which comes in handy if you ever forget to pack it in your diaper bag.) But we change the other ones every night.

4. Say prayers or show gratitude

We say our prayers as part of our baby bedtime routine. And a prayer we pray a lot is please let us all get some good rest tonight.

If praying is not your thing, may I suggest you have a way of showing gratitude for the things in your life. Make it as simple as saying I’m thankful for: these 5 things.

It’s a great way to end what was probably a very chaotic day and it recenters you to think about all you have. It’s also a great way to show your child how to be grateful.

Yes, they are too young to understand right now. But your baby bedtime routine is likely something you’ll continue throughout most of their life.

5. Say night-night

After prayers, we always say night-night to mommy and daddy. And give hugs and kisses, if that’s your thing.

As your kiddo ages, this may include saying goodnight to his favorite stuffed toys.

If we have company at bedtime, we make sure to tell them goodnight. And once my son was old enough to know people were around, we let him know they all had to go to bed too. It wasn’t just him.

6. Rock or sway

Once you stop feeding your baby to sleep, you may still want some special cuddles before bed.

So go ahead and spend some time in that rocking chair with your little one. (They’re not this small for long, so enjoy those special moments.)

This is tricky though to not let your baby fall asleep before you put him in the crib or bassinet, as the motion of laying him down may wake him up.

I found that swaying back and forth on the way to the crib was a good substitute for the rocker and still gave us that close time before bed.

7. Put baby down in crib or bassinet

After you’ve done all of the above, it’s finally time to put baby down for the night.

Always put baby on his back and keep the sleep area free of blankets and toys.

I have used a baby sound machine since the first night in the hospital, which has really seemed to help drown out any distractions for my son to get to sleep. This one has multiple settings for running times and sounds, and it also has a nightlight feature.

Before my son was born, I had a coworker who insisted that I couldn’t live without a baby sound machine. However, my husband wasn’t completely sold on the idea since he needs white noise to fall asleep. He didn’t want to put that burden on a child.

Sound Machine, for Mom?

Before I give you the absolute best baby sound machines for newborns and toddlers, let me suggest that you get yourself a sound machine as well.

I actually use the White Noise Lite app and set it to play for 20 minutes. I’m usually asleep by then and not so out of it that I can’t hear my little one.

If you’re a new mom or a mom-to-be, there is a period when your baby will finally sleep through the night. HOORAY!!!

But since you’ve been operating on weird schedules and no sleep, you are now unable to fall asleep. It’s so FRUSTRATING!

I actually purchased the portable version of this baby sound machine before purchasing this one. Only because we weren’t planning on using any baby sound machines. (I was young and naive then, now I know better.) Only because I’ve seen them work.

The reason I chose this soother is because it came with the same sounds as the portable one I was already using, and I knew my son was used to hearing it. So, I’ve actually only used one of the eight sounds available.

I use this baby sound machine for my son’s naps. It runs on electric, so it can run for hours. The volume is adjustable so as not to hurt your little one’s ears. But my son was a horrible napper, and this soother has been the best thing to get him to sleep for an entire nap.

Finally, this baby soother also comes with night light feature and star projection, which I’ve never even used. But I think we are entering the night light phase, so I’m super excited to already have one on hand.

Skip Hop Portable Baby Soother

I know I said we weren’t planning on using a baby sound machine when my son was born; however, this portable baby soother (and the Shusher below) were my two must-haves.

The number one thing I love about this soother, is that it’s portable. So yes, that means it will hang from your stroller, packs easily in your diaper bag, and works like a dream!

I made sure to pack this in my hospital bag, so it was available night one at the hospital. It makes this whooshing noise (which might actually be the ocean, but I think it sounds like what your baby would hear in the womb). So, I thought it was perfect to cover up all the hospital noises. I put it right in his bassinet (at his feet) to give him a little comfort.

I don’t know how much I’ve talked about my son not liking to sleep, but I’ve also used this portable baby sound machine, hanging from the stroller, as I pushed my son through the house (urging him to fall asleep). I honestly can’t tell you how many miles my husband pushed that stroller while he gave me a couple hours rest.

And finally, I’m still using this soother two years in as my son’s nighttime sound machine. It works on batteries and only plays for an hour, so it’s just long enough for him to fall into a deep sleep. And you can adjust the volume, so you don’t have to worry about damaging your little one’s ears.

Baby Shusher

The Baby Shusher is by far the most magical thing on earth when trying to get your newborn to fall asleep.

I learned about this during my childbirth class and knew it had to be at the top of my baby registry. And it’s so simple. It’s just a baby sound machine that makes a shushing noise (so you don’t have to).

There’s a method using the 5 S’s to Soothe a Baby by Dr. Harvey Karp and the Shusher just happens to be the third S:

1. Swaddle – get a Velcro swaddle wrap for the perfect swaddle
2. Side or Stomach – hold your baby on their side or belly
3. Shush – make the shushing noise (or get the Baby Shusher)
4. Swing – rock your arms gently back and forth, while supporting baby’s head and neck (never shake your baby)
5. Suck – allow your baby to suck a pacifier (only if breastfeeding is established)

I used this method one night when my son would not calm down. I was out of ideas, sleep-deprived and then I remembered the 5 S’s. It was a little miracle at 3 in the morning.

I will add that once you’re out of the newborn phase, the Shusher loses some of its magical powers, but that hasn’t stopped me from gifting it to every new mom I know.

Best Musical Toys for Newborns and Toddlers

Fisher Price Calming Vibes Hedgehog Soother

While this is listed as a soother, I don’t classify it as a baby sound machine, simply because it does not have a continuous play option. However, this hedgehog soother was AMAZING at keeping my little guy calm for middle of the night diaper changes. And works even now that we’ve hit the terrible twos.

It vibrates and plays music and calming noises. And now that my son is a bit older, he can press it himself and enjoys going through the musical rotation. And he loves snuggling the hedgehog.

And when he’s losing it during a tantrum or meltdown, I place the soother against his belly or his cheek, and the vibrations calm him down (most of the time).

And a bonus feature: the hedgehog is washable once the electronics are removed.

Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes

I’ve added this musical toy to this list of baby sound machines because it got us through some very difficult diaper changes.

So, although it’s not a sound machine and doesn’t have a continuous play option, it does play 10 melodies of classical music. It has a volume control, which comes in handy late at night. It makes a great teether, when the time comes.

And now that I have a toddler, the Take Along Tunes musical toy is perfect for long car rides and cleans easily.
